steering Gearbox

Trucks got some serious play in wheel and has developed a slip when going into left corners. Figured i need to replace the gearbox. You fellas got any recomendations on vendor? Don't wanna get a P.O.S and also don't wanna break my meager bank. Open to other suggestions as well.

yep check the plate to the frame, I cracked mine 3 or 4 times. Napa is where I got my gear box too, and get one with lifetime warranty, they replaced mine for free twice. After all the replacing things multiple times I did cross over steering , and it solved all my steering issues.

Thanks. I did check the plate last night and it has been welded back up. Looks to be an OK repair. The gear box is leaking like a civ. I'll start by replacing it. Thanks for your input.

Does this mean NAPA offers a poor quality steering box with a good warranty? Sorta tough to justify unless you enjoy replacing steering boxes...

I wouldn't say its a poor product, when your running 38's on a daily driver and wheeler, you just need more. (Crossover, hydrualic)

the '72 -~ 76 Power Wagon 4x4 W100-W400 Trucks had a better reverse rotation setup that had a beefy cast iron mount. It was retrofitted after that with a 2wd box for cost. I recommend switching to the reverse rotation box unless you want to put a big lift on there to go crossover.

Will everything mount up the same or are there other mods that will need to be made? Was thinkin I'd pull off existing and clean up the plate and get a box from local CarQuest (all we have other than O'Reily).

CarQuest was around $160 after core. I'd deal with the play if i had to drop 3bills. I'd say $120 of thats for the name?

Check the pot joint on your steering arm. If thats old enough, maybe it just needs replaced. Mine was so bad that I could turn the wheel from 11 oclock to 2 oclock position without moving the wheels.

Just a thought of something to check before you spend major cash.
