Starter contacts?

Stopped on the way to work today and when I restarted the truck the starter would not disengage and when I shut the key off the engine would not turn off either. Has anyone else seen this? I suspect the starter contacts might going bad and when they stuck they were back feeding the shut off solenoid relay. Thanks for any suggestions.

What you said sounds right. Do the contacts first.

Also toss a diode into the circuit so it won't burn out the costly fuel solenoid. A 70 amp diode should do it. It stops the backflow problem. Does not cure the starter contacts problem though. Probably be a good idea to replace the relay on the firewall as well.

Places sell all of the components you need, or if you shop around, you can save over 50% of the cost if you locate the parts from electronics suppliers. KD

Take a look at the fostertruck site. He has a good explanation on this and sells replacement contacts which are larger as well as the diode.

Beware, worn out sticking contacts will burn out your $200 shutdown solenoid, may take some wiring with it and start a fire.
Replace the contacts ASAP, this place has fast shipping, replacement is easy, directions here also http://www.fostertruck.com/dodge/default.htm

Thanks for the suggestions, was going thru my paperwork and the starter is under warranty so am gonna bully the parts house into replacing it but before I install the new one am going to install a set of Larry B's contacts and the diode...looks like very cheap insurance against both this issue happening again and either an electrical fire or burning up the shut off solenoid.

Instead of the diode I did the wiring harness with relay to the starter solenoid. Better than the diode imo and it does the same thing, plus it may help with cranking.

You can find the relay kit from Larry B here:
