zero fuel pressure

1. Add a fuel pressure gauge, this will eliminate bummer surprises like this one.
2. An aftermarket fuel kit, FASS etc.
3. If you want to go less $, contact Eric at Vulcan Performance about one of his lift pump relocation kits.
4. Have you checked your engine codes yet? Turn key on-off-on-off-on and look at your odometer.

Doesn't sound like the gauge is bad - you've got a bad code that confirms that the gauge is working.
0236 is a mistiming event in the injection pump. It can be set at low pressures as you've described - it may mean that your VP-44 isn't getting enough fuel and is nearing failure. Or it may mean that your VP-44 isn't getting enough fuel and has already failed. Check your lift pump, clear up the fuel delivery issue (over 12 psi idle, at least), reset the codes, drive the vehicle, check for codes again. If you get 0236 again - your injection pump needs replacement. It's not cheap.
