Wiring Back up lights
I'm gonna put some aux. back up lights on my rig. I want to run them thru a fuse and relay but have them come on when I'm in reverse, not on a seperate switch. Will the stock switch handle this if I tie into it? Thanks, Kurt

I've got mine wired up through a relay but they are also on a switch so they can be turned off, on with the backup lights or on with the switch. No more work than it is to put the switch in that's the way I'd go again.

Yes a relay is a must.
This is one of the things I need to do to my truck when I get time. I park my trailer next to my shop and it gets real close. I can't see it half the time.

I wired using a relay and took power from the trailer connector. The back up light wire powers the relay and the light power comes from the hot wire in the trailer connector.

Thanks for all the replies. I have realized that the lights can be helpful when rolling up the jobsite after dark and think I'll wire them w/ a separate switch and relay so I can have them on with the truck running. Thanks, Kurt

I originally had mine hooked into the reverse light circuit with no electrical problems but cut that out and hooked them up with a switch because it seemed I was always leaving the key on and the truck in reverse so I could see.

wasn't there a thread about this somewhere on here a couple of weeks ago. the idea that i liked the best was to use the dome light switch to trigger a relay for the aux. lights. that way if you wanted them on just to be on you could have them or when in reverse either way. this would also help with those ppl in little cars that don't know how to have their lights adjusted correctly or to dim hi beams when following someone.
