Wider tire size?

I have 265-75-16 on my truck now.
I want a wider tire, but not a taller tire.
Any input the size I need?

You can use a tire calculator to find a similar height in any size you want, but the wider you go the taller they generally get. Are you interested in any specific brands? A 305/65/16 would be near identical. 315/65 would be about 1.5% off, and a 295/65 is close to 2% off. That equates to about a .5" difference in tire height.

I should also mention that just because those sizes are close does not mean people make them. You'll have to go through some brands you like, and see what comes close.

my suggestion might be to get some new rims like mayb a 9" without an offset should add some width or get an offset on the rims and they will stick out more. This is expensive but it might give you want you want without getting a larger tire. I wouldnt go any wider than a 9" though. I have a 16"x10" rim wit a 305/70/R16 and they stick out a good 4" or 5" front and back I love it!! but as stated before it will be hard to find a wider 265 but the 305s I believe in most tire sizes are only about 1.75" to 2" taller so not much of a difference.

I run the tires and wheels listed in my sig. I have pics in the gallery. I like the look, but may be getting some flares just to keep from stoning my truck to death

Wider will noticeably lower fuel economy, and cause cupping and uneven wear without wider wheels. I hate my 315's, and have happily downgraded to 285's. The perfect tire if you ask me. I started out on 265's when I bought my truck. Too skinny, get stuck on wet grass, and didn't fill the wheel well enough. My 285 75 16's are perfect. You don't even need a leveling kit to clear them!

I'm still on the fence about my 285's. I've spent the past few weeks getting confused over why my mileage is terrible (hand calculated correctly), and the only thing it can be is my tires or winter fuel. Though, I'm pretty sure no one around here has gone to winter fuel yet.

well there could be a ton of reasons for low milage, im pritty sure my problem is my tires cuz im running them at 45 psi so they wear evenly and last a little longer, just long enoff for me to scrape up the money for new rims and biger tires (place i bought it from put extreamly cheep mud terains on with range c's in front and e's in back) anyways back to u, maybe u need to track the problem down before jupming into anything

I will be putting the tires on a different set of wheels. I'm looking for a pretty aggresive tread pattern like Cooper STT or BFG Mud. Will only be running the wheel/tire combo when hunting in the CO mountains.

I'm aware that there could be dozens of reasons, but the only thing thats changed between now and a few weeks ago when I was getting 20mpg is my tires, and the cooler weather.

To the OP: If you're only going to be using these for hunting in the mountains, why the major concern with keeping the size the same? I'd throw a 285/75/16 on there, or any wheel size for that matter really and just call it a day.

285/70 - 16 will be almost exactly the same height and a shade over 3/4" wider.

Tire #'ing breakdown:

First # is width in mm (divide by 25.4 to get inches)
Second # is % of sidewall height to width
Third # is rim size.

I pull a 5th wheel and I already have marks on the bed, so I need to keep the height as close to what I have now as possible. If it weren't for pulling the trailer, I would be going an entirely different direction.

As will all 2nd gens, my 2500 4x4 sits mighty tall in the rear. I also have the camper package. It's not so much the highway clearance of the trailer, it's the off canter stuff I deal with once on the dirt.
Thanks for the info guys.

Your best option to go wider without going too much taller is probably a 305/70/16 because those are pretty commonly made and also available with the load ratings you need.

These are as tall as a 285/75, but 20mm wider. (almost an inch)
