Why remove the silencer ring?
I still don't know about this silencer ring thing. I removed it, heard the sound, and after a couple of weeks, put it back on. Not that I didn't like the sound, but it became clear to me that the ring is there more to shape the air moving into the turbo blades than to silence the unit. If you look at the metal facing around the blade housing, it's deeply indented for structural strength and baffling. Without the ring, air flow in that area will be turbulent, and likely create a partial vacuum in front of the turbo inlet. It's the turbo blades overcoming that unnecessary turbulence that gives the bigger sound, but the turbo also has to work harder to straighten out the "messy" air. Not great for the turbo at 60K RPM, the quieter it is, the better it's working. Sure, the difference in HP is probably minimal, but I'll bet it has a measurable effect on the life of pinwheel bearings.

Seems like a small but unnecessary risk to me.

ascraeus

I think that the only change that a little lower compressor inlet pressure would have is a slight increase in the thrust bearing load. I like the sound, and I don't think it is detrimental to the cartridge life. Other things, such as hot shutdowns and surging, have a much more profound effect on cartridge life-cycle.

Re:Why remove the silencer ring?
It is a dyno proven fact that removing the silencer ring has absolutely no affect whatsoever on power. And as far as I know, I've never heard of a turbo dying prematurely from removing the ring.

Re:Why remove the silencer ring?
If the ring were to make that big of a difference, wouldn't there be a longer intake to accomodate a more "cone" shaped "silencer" ring in order to create a better vortex of airflow to the turbo thus enhancing the efficiency and power?

Took mine out last night! Love the sound and everyone I have talked to said it will not hurt the turbo any. It was designed to keep the noise level down for a driving vehicle. I say if you want a quite rig, BUY A GASSER! ;D

Re:Why remove the silencer ring?
Y'all are saying it doesn't matter and you like the whine. Great! Go for it! ;D

I'm saying the whine has to come from somewhere, and it comes from increased turbulence in the air going through the blades. I'm saying that over a lengthy service life, there will be increased wear on bearings. I'm not saying the turbo is going to scatter or you're going to dyno 50 HP less because y'all took the silencer ring out. :

Geez, now I feel like a troll(er?).

Somebody had a photo of a big cone welded to the turbo inlet to shape the air. He said it made a difference. Whoever you are, help me out here, guy!

ascraeus

Nah- you aren't a troll... Just the way forums go-
fan example. Sr-71 has a big cone in front of the fan blades.
F-14, 15, 16 no cone. They all seem to produce an enormous amount of thrust. To each their own ;D
