If you want to tame the drone, get a straight thru type muffler and put on the pipe that was welded in. The stock mufflers are very restrictive and hold tons of heat, which you have already found out. I've got some kind of Dynomax round muffler on my truck, it came with it. Sounds very nice, little drone.

I have mine straight piped... I have a 4" downpipe going into 5" that exits just before the rear of the cab... I'm waiting to put a single stack on there. Its loud, and it rattles the rear slider window something fierce (I need to jam something in there to stop it), but man it sure does sound good .

everybody that has had this on or off has an opinion, so heres mine.. i cut the cat and muffler out, welded in a 3" pipe. sorta loud with the windows down, but i kinda like watching people grimace at the deep sound. sorta loud i said so i'm gonna weld the muffler back in. look at the muffler and it's a 4.5-5" inlet. don't know, just me knows its too galdang big for a 3" pipe. call the muffler shop in the next town and it's 85.00 for an adapter. staying in now till i can save the cash for a 4" mbrp since it's supposed to be almost stock sound. now i don't know about anyone elses truck but my turbo spools up much faster now and i hit 29 psi without a boost elbow, don't know why but hey what do i care it does...

The stock cat convertor has a 3" inlet 4" (I think) outlet that goes to a muffler with 4" in 3" out. Not sure why they did that, but that's what I found on mine. I have thought that if I ever get in trouble for not having a muffler that I would get a flow through design to put on there.

although you can go by what people say, one persons drone is anothers quiet. you almost have to drive in two differnt setups in the same truck.

My truck had a 3 inch straight pipe for 2 years and it got very annoying when towing and sometimes cruising at 70 it would drone. Now I have a 4 inch straight pipe from the turbo back. Now when I cruise down the highway i have alot less noise in the cab. When towing its still very loud. When I get on the throttle it gets very loud but its a less annoying to the ears than the 3 inch pipe was. I can actually hear myself think with the 4 inch straight pipe on. Sounds like you don't like a ton of noise from your exhaust, maybe try a 4 inch system w/ a muffler like others have said. I've heard tony597fitters truck and it sounds very good from inside the cab, alot less noise than what my truck makes. From the outside it still has a nice grunt to it.
