Piers' shafts aren't any bigger than stock. I personally know of a local 12Ver who popped TWO of Piers' 40s. He's ~500hp.

It's not Piers' fault. You can only polish a turd so much.

That said, a 40 can easily be made to live. Just limit it to 35psi or so. NEVER go past 38psi. Remember, the 40 and 35 share the same shaft size, but the 40 has larger wheels. Those larger wheels can make more stress on the shaft.

40s seem to last forever in twins. They only pop as singles. This is because what kills 40s are the quick transitions. Twins slow down the transitions (slower spool and let down), so your barking with a tight TC and other misbehavior is a lot less.

Another way to help a 40 live is use the 18 housing instead of the 16. The slower spool and lower boost overall helps a lot. Yes, it's a lag pig with a tight TC, but you could probably get away with it on a 6-speed. I wouldn't run it on a 5-speed because the lag will kill you on the huge 2-3 gearsplit.

If you can get a Super 40 for $750, you might want to consider it. It CAN be made to live, you just have to know and respect it limitations. Unfortunately, it just can't handle big PRs as well as a BW-Schwitzer based unit like the HTT turbos or II turbos.

For me, though, a Phat Shaft 62 is only ~$1100, and I'd rather spend a little more money for a near-bulletproof unit.

The PDR HX40/16 that I have on my truck works pretty good. The low end response of the whole truck became extremely strong after I put in the mad ecm. I lucked out and got the unused PDR HX40 for only $500 plus shipping from a TDR member who bought it, then decided to put in twins instead.

There's a B-1-2 in the classifieds for $900
Might work good for you.

As far as I can tell, the prices went up on the Phat Shafts. 62 and 64 higher than last month on II's webpage. $1400 for PS62. Guess they're selling too many

What are the major differances between the PDR40 and the Super 40?? Or, are they just a similar unit made by two different companies?

Super 40 is a "factory hot rod" from Holset, the original maker of the turbo.

PDR40 is a speed-shop reworking of the original Holset HX40.

Yeah, but I think he's looking for something cheaper than the B-1 and KSB-1. I personally am going to run a S300g because for the fact that is only 700 bucks and can support 450hp easily.

Isn't that the turbo that the B-1, HTB2, and PS's are based on?
