Why is everyone so hesitant to tap the pump
#16
Wow, This is good stuff. You guys just made my mind. I am getting a pm3 and guess what???? Also my fp is dropping to below zero at WOT. I am taking it in to have the lp replaced next week. Warranty is covering it. I even left the puck on the truck when they checked the pressure. Should I take it off before I take it in?

It sure wouldn't hurt anything if you did take it off. Now, its a different story it was left in and they decided to change their minds about the warrenty coverage......who's to say a dealer won't do that........not me,,,,,of course!!!

if you do remove the puck,,which i would,,with your injectors youll set an overboost code.i did that with mine and the battery terminal trick wont remove it.maybe autozone or somewhere with a scanner could clear it?any ideas fellas?

bama,
I may have to put the stock elbow back in, but I think I can drive it around with the boost elbow without overboost. I'll give it a shot. It is only a few miles to the local dealer.

You guys think of everything don't you. I will put the stock elbow back in. I found out how to do a volume check on the lp. With an open line( such as the 18" line feeding the sending unit) unhooked the pump should pump 45oz. in 25 seconds. If it doesn't get close then either the filter is restricting or the pump is going. The cummins guy said that usually if they are going bad the pump won't hold 15psi. That is why he said mine was OK. But I won't settle for that. I am going to change the filter and run a volume check. He also said there was a screen in the tank that would starve the lift pump

I pierced the wire on my 98.5 some 140 000 kms ago. VP44 still working.
I think that some troubles with electronic failures of the VP44 can be attributed to shorting the pump wire to the ground or to cutting it off with the scotchlock. (rather cramped space to work in)
Since DC is looking deeper and deeper into the 'puters on these trucks to determine wheter a performance device had been installed or not it will be getting more dificult to get warranty with any kind of device on the truck at any time. (Hey this could become a nice Magnussen-Moss discussion )
Another reason for not tapping the wire is that the stock autos are known to be on the very borderline with the higher output with the wire pinched. Some of them will last, but lots of them won't.

I have been contemplating tapping the wire on my Edge Drag Comp, just don't have the money set aside for a new VP if I grenade it! Obviously would be a good excuse to hook up one of the monsters that Battering Ram has been playing with.
Really on the fence. I have a 1999 with the stock VP, no issues, and 134,000 miles on it. Planning on getting rid of the Carter LP in the next week or so to boot.
What to do, what to do.....

Tapped mine last night after driving it for a little over a month untapped. I can tell a little differance but not a lot. I decided to go ahead and tap it since my truck was going to the tranny shop (just dropped it off). I was really expecting instant afterburners. I do notice a bit more smoke on level 5X5. I'm fixin to buy some EDM's on the "group buy" (thinking about 1.5's). Maybe that will wake her up a bit.
Don't get me wrong, it (comp) has plenty of power. Just expecting Night and Day differance.
Had quite a time hookin' that wire up too. Stripped out a BC pump cover so I tried to use the scotch loc, mangled it to the point that it wouldn't connect. Looked like it may have cut a few strands from the wire. I finally decided that there was no way this would pass if a warranty situation should arise, so much for being stealthy, so I soldered it. No worries about connection now.

Your tranny was probably roasting. That's probably why you didn't feel much of a difference. Also, what's your fuel pressure at? When I had my comp and had the pump wire pierced, I could tell a big difference in power. And I only ran mine up to 3x3.

40k on our truck tapped. 19k pounds for over 5k miles without a hitch. 125k on the truck
*edit* we also have a big ole fuel pump though. without it your injector pump is a real ticking time bomb

Someone e-mail me on the group buy on the EDM's. I am looking to buy some. I noticed the 14 holers in the classifieds. I think they are the Adkins breed. How do they compare to Don's. Ring in here anytime Don.
