I sheared the bolts and straps off the dana 70 yoke twice and I busted all the spider gears in the carrier, all while sled pulling. My brother has sheared two pinion gears sled pulling. If your gonna be pulling then go with the 80.

I broke it in my 1st gen but, it's a manual tranny............autos are a bit easier on them.
I think Jimmy Smiths truck still runs a 70.
Are all Dana 80's 35 spline?
What's it take to convert to 37 spline axles?
What are the spline count for Dana 70's?
Are they different for some years?

Broke the left axle my D70 in my 99 sled pulling, but I had a spare. Wheel hop. Still had to pull the LS apart to drive out the broken stub that was in it. Added ladder bars. After it was all back together I went sled pulling again and EXPLODED the spider gears in the LS. Got a complete kit to rebuild the LS from Randy's (everything but the case). Since then I have a little wine around 40mph, and up. Figure the pinion bearing got some trash in it. LS still tight as a drum though.
I will upgrade to an AAM at some point, just bypassing the D80 altogether because I hear the AAM is stronger.

I believe all dodge dana 80's are 35 spline, and the 37 spline ones came in some fords. You can convert it to 37 spline with the shafts and carrier. Might even be able to just swap the spider gears over, or get a 37 spline locker of some sort. 2nd gen dana 70's are 32 spline, the earlier 1st gen ones are 35 spline, not sure what year they switched though.

35 spline in a 1st gen? I've never been into anything earlier than a 92 and they all had 32 spline axles. I have 2 89's, a 90 and a 91, but I don't have the ambition to pull axles out and count them right now, too cold out.

I broke my d D80 with just the Superchips and exhaust one night. Decided I was going to climb a small wet hill in 2wd, slid back and hit the pavement while spinning about 18k. I don't think it should have broke but all the spider gears shattered. Put a junk yard unit in and all is fine....................so far??
