ID say for twins

hx35 or 40 with a 14 or 16 cm exhaust housing, with a solid HT3b with a 26 cm exhaust housing.. basic, simple, but effective...

the hx35/40 hybrid and ht3b is going to be your cheapest setup. that is if your going to build them yourself. ive seen a set up with a turbo mounted exhaust brake on the hx35 work with twins.

I agree with what everyone has said for the bottom turbo, BUT all you need for the top one is a 35. There is no need for the 40 on the top or even a 35/40 hybrid on the top because of the way the compressors compound in series. This is grossly misunderstood by a lot of guys... There are people who have made well over 600 HP with a 35 on top.

For what you describe, just put a 35-14 on top and an HT3B- 26 on the bottom and you will be very very pleased.

would there be much difference between a 35HX and a 35HY in the twins setup ?

Hy-35's have been tried several times and don't seem to be usable. Not exactly sure why.
Nice mid sized, towing twins here...and can keep 4" exhaust!

No, you dont want the HY for sure. The 9cm housing is way WAY too small. Compressor-wise there is nothing wrong with it, but that 9 exhaust housing is a no-no.

Yes, RJ, those BD twins are very nice. But they are capable of much more than people credit them for. They are more than just a mid sized towing twins. They got that mid-sized rap, because of the smaller top turbo, but when compounding compressors, the small top turbo is exactly what you want. They got it right, but people keep thinking they are too small...

They may have got it right, but they never finished them. They need a wastegate on both turbos! I dynoed 360/860 with a B1, then put on the BD Twins and couldn't get boost below 60psi. I had the wastegate open as much as I could. I believe BD rates them at 550hp, but I was more than 100hp shy of that and was exceeding their recomended maximum boost pressure.

Don't take this as knocking that setup, I really like them. EGT's would barely get to 1350*, and towing was awesome. But I had a bigger set sitting there, and more fuel to go on too

Just my humble, uneducated (in turbo speak) opinion,
Chris

I just installed my BD twins this weekend, but I did some mods to the wastegated turbo first to contain boost. Thanks to "AK Ram" here on DTR with some of his suggestions. I ordered a new wastegate from BD with the adjustable wastegate arm so I didn't have to worry about the shims. I also ordered a standoff wastegate spacer from HTT that allows the wastegate to fully open. I haven't seen any boost pressure over 50 psi so far. I've also still got some travel in the wastegate arm to open it more fully if necessary. Of course I only have 85 hp injectors, so that is helping me limit the boost right now. It feels like I have an awesome towing set up right now although I haven't towed with it yet. It also seems like with its current responsiveness that it could be a rocket with bigger injectors if you wanted to really hot rod it.

I knew it was possible to drop the boost, but it wasn't really bothering me Those parts should already come with the kit, though!

You'll like those twins

Well, the new ones do have the adjustable actuator arm on the wastgate, I bought mine used. I agree that they should have the spacer that allows the wastegate to fully open though.
