I myself an wrestling with this question.

To me, spoolup is more important than EGT control-- always will be. As it is right now, I never have EGT issues on a daily basis. If I run up at WOT on the interstate, the EGTs will kiss 1400 and come right back down, which is perfectly acceptable to me for such a short blast.

But I'd like to drop those temps. I'd also like to let the engine breathe a little better, since that turbine on the HX35 is positively miniscule. That 12cm housing equates to a hole about 1.5" in diameter! That's tiny. The wheel is bigger, but that tiny housing doesn't help much.

The the tight factory turbo is roasting my EGTs, as the engine just can't pump the air past is with reasonable effort. That's why I haven't bothered upgrading my exhaust system yet. How much how restrictive can a 3.5" exhaust be if it's downstream of a 1.5" pipe?

The factory turbo is also a little overbuilt for a performance application. By all reasonable measures, I should have grenaded it a long time ago. A turbo designed to make 20psi by all rights shouldn't be holding on at 38psi!

The problem I have with all the BW-Schwitezer based turbos is that they are all designed in an overkill sense. They are HEAVY internally, and they generate quick spoolup by brute force, not so much by lighter, more advanced materials and/or friction reduction.

That leaves the ball-bearing turbos. There aren't many out there, though I'm hearing great things about the Garrett Stg 3 once you fix a design flaw they made. The other option are the turbonetics Torque Master turbos, but they won't reply to my emails asking for more info, and no one seems to be running them!
