What turbo do you TOW with?

Lets not argue about what turbo is best. Id just like for everyone that hauls with their truck to share their experiences with the turbo(s) they have ran. EGT and spoolup compared to stock and whatever else seems important to you would be good information. I have an HX40 waiting to go on mine, just wanting to see what everyone else is having good luck with.

All I know is mine (S300G -62) is too small to tow with with my fuel level. At this point I have been persuaded to try a Garrett GT3788R and see if that helps. Having an auto or stick will make a difference on selection.

You won't find a turbo that spools better than stock.
I tow with a HX 35/12, but it has a s-400 under it. It will tow at any speed, but you need to watch the water temps!!!

Side note, with the auto, I have to pay attention at 55-65 MPH, EGT's get a little hotter than I like.

I'd have to say the best turbo for towing with anything done to the engine powerwise, my vote would go to the Aurora 2000. I miss that little charger. I'm not too sure it wasn't faster than stock but would sing between 48-53 psi. Unreal midrange power, kept cool, and had a pretty sweet top end as well. If I were ever going to buy something and set it up for hauling, the A2K would definately be my first choice to run on it. I personally think the 62mm line chargers spool too slow to tow but my only experience with that is my Super PhatShaft which has a bigger exhaust wheel and the 14 housing, not the 12. Just my .02

The HX40 is a turbo that has been around for years. On a 12v they will have a fair amount of lag with one. When they come on the pull hard, but it will take a while to get it to light up. They are sort of like comparing a VCR to a Blue Ray player. They work ok, but there is much better technology available now.
The Super B turbo is going to spool very close to what the stock one does and will still flow a large enough volume of air to keep 450hp cool in the 12v. Plus they have a much stronger shaft in them. The HX40 if you get off the throttle too quickly can break shafts.

I just bought an HX40 for mine. I dont have it on yet, but im anxious to see how it does. I really wanted to try a BD super B, but my 35 is dying quickly, and for the money i will have in the 40, it just couldnt be beat. I can handle a little lag, and I think as long as i keep from barking it, it will be fine.

I also think a 62 is a little big for towing. A lot of people swear by them, but i have been in Teddy Bear's truck with a load when he had a SPS62 and it just ran hot. Ran good for pulling/racing, but it just wasnt good for towing IMO.

I ran the EDGE jammer turbo "hated it". ended up with a GARRETT TS04-P trim with a 1.00 A/R euro turbine housing. its way better then the EDGE JAMMER, but I can still roast the E.G.T. gauge. its non waste gated and makes 25 lbs. of boost

I had a HX40 before my 62/14 and loved for towing. I tow every day for work. The setup was edge drag/comp,HX40,125hp injectors(MAD ECM?? dont know if that made any difference)and DTT trans.
Towing 3/3 low smoke.
Playing 5/5 SMOKE like a coal train.
Pull anything I wanted!!

How were EGT's running empty running it hard? Also, how did it tow compared to your 62 you have now? Thanks

I've tried all 64 & 62 variations. The 62/71/14 is by far the best with 125-150hp injectors, no bigger. A 62/65/14 is great with some 100hp sticks, but I still like my current setup best.

You mention keeping 450hp cool in a 12v. Do you mean while towing? What about on a 24v?

I'd like to know the specs on the Super B and Super B Special.

??/??/12 , 62/??/14

With the Super B they use the extended tip compressor wheel. These chargers are measured with the a/r ratio. Also everyone seems to be so hung up on the wheel size. Flow characteristics are what you really need to know. I have seen maps that show a 57mm wheel out flowing a 62mm wheel. That being said you would be looking at a close to a 57/14 and a 62/14.
The turbo will cool when towing as long as you don't lug it down. At 450 in a 12v you can get it hot, depending on how you drive it. The 24v is a little more forgiving.
The Super B turbo will flow 850cfm and the Special is 1160cfm. The Super B Special is a turbo that likes to be worked hard. It isn't a great towing turbo. It will have some lag when towing, but it wasn't designed to be a towing turbo. Hope this clears a bit up.

Yeah that helps a bit, I just wondered if I am really gonna be happy with the super B while towing. I am planning on some clean 150hp sticks and a timing box.

The 150 sticks with a box will push the turbo about as far as it is comfortable to go with. You will still be able to get it to smoke, but it will work for you. From here to if you decide you want to go bigger you can upgrade the single into our twin kit.

Running a 64\71\12 hi tech, jammer 150s, quadzilla, 5-speed, 285\75\16 and 4.10 I can keep it at 1000-1250F pulling whatever at a pretty good speed.
There's probably a better setup but this is working for me. 550HP @ tires.
