I'd say you have 3.55s, I wouldn't worry about changing gears unless you just want to

Yep, if you have near stock tire sizes, then you have 3.54's. Dont change a thing, they are perfect for everything you could ever want to do. Dont let anyone talk you into 4.10's, they are totally unecessary, and actually quite absurd with the Cummins engine.

EXACTLY! everybody askes me if id rather have the 4.10's and im all no, ive got more than enough torque to get any tralier rollin with my 3.55's that you can with your 4.10's. plus i get better fuel milage

Yeah, but we're ready for bigger tires right off the bat

I'm going to 315s Friday.. If you want a drag tire, the Nittos grip the road REALLY well.. Don't count on them for off road though.

That is why I have been thinking about changing mine, but I just figured I'll mess with the engine first. Or actually I'm tending to tranny issues right now.

Lightbulb Rear Driveline Info

FYI, All of the driveline info is printed on the label plate in the glovebox. At least it is in my truck. I agree with all the posts regarding the lower gears. I love the mileage boost with the higher gearing. Even with all the mods and running the Comp at 2-3 im still getting close to 20 MPG as long as I keep the long skinny under control

I have stock gearing with 315's and it works pretty well..............although I am thinking about doing some 4:10's to get a little more ummph. The stock gears run pretty well, but without a chip or any mods it was a TERD going up hills especially if it dropped into OD!! With the COMP I have no problem what so ever, but with 4:10's it would even be that much better. Plus I'm planning on some 38's here soon so I am gonna need to lower gears for sure!

SOOO, if you are just planning on staying with the stock tire size or even 285's, I would stay with the 3:55's, anything lower than that with some mods, you are just gonna sit and burn your tires........especially trying to launch hard.

Gears

I have the 4:10's in my 98.5 3500 dually 2wd and I agree that the CTD has more than enough torque with higher gears. My biggest problem is starting on bad surface conditions, snow, ice, water, gravel or sand on the road and I spin the tires, even got stuck on a hill side once.
The lower ratio is nice on the mountains though.

IMO, it's much easier to add HP than to mess with a gearing change.

I can see how an auto tranny guy might want the 4.10s (and the taller OD helps), but for a 6-speed, I just can't imagine a scenario where I'd NEED a 4.10

With the 3.54s, 1st gear is low enough to move any legal weight-- even with STOCK POWER. Now you go and bomb that sucker and it's overkill.

If I REALLY needed more oomph, there's no reason you can't drop it into 4lo.

Think about it: If you have a 4wd 6speed like mine, and it dynoes 900lb-ft like mine, then you theoretically have up to 48,500 lb-ft to the wheels in your lowest gear (1st, 4lo). Even in 4hi you have almost 18000 lb-ft at the wheels in 1st gear.

If you can't move it in 1st 4lo with a bombed CTD, then It's not going to move with a pickup.

Cost is an issue, too. Compare the cost of a box or hp upgrade to offset the gearing difference to the cost of a gear swap-- BOMBing looks like a real value, then!!

Hohn, I understand what you are saying, but all depends on what you want to do. I pulled up almost 36,000 lbs of weight (43K gross) for 3500 miles in june with 3.55's. I never used sixth. Did it work? Yes, would I prefer 4.10's? Yes. Do I do that kind of pulling everyday? No Am I glad I finally swapped gears? Hell Yeah. With the 315's I run, (I didnt run them on the long haul, I used G rated tires) I run 1450 mph in sixth at 60 mph. I really only use this truck for pulling. About 13k is what I normally pull. Plus swapping gears allowed me to put some lockers in it right away. I do drive it quite a bit, but I only put on about 15k a year. Having 4.10's with 315's feels like 3.55's and the 265's for rpm's. It all depends on what you want to do. Oh by the way, I do have over 900 ft lbs. These 4.10's suited me for what I do. If I never towed, I wouldnt of changed. Other options are underdrives which I looked at, but I couldnt put lockers in. If you know how to set up gears, it is fairly inexpensive. I bought my gears for dana 80 and 60 for 180 bucks. No carrier's with that.
