What Do You Need To Beef Up A 47re ?
My buddy wants to add a Power Puck to his 98.5. He Already has A 50hp downloader. So I was wondering what he could do to make sure the tranny can handle the extra ponies for a long time. I was thinking a valve body. But I was wondering about the TC.

The Dodge trans can take quite a bit of power with a good TC, valve body and just some minor mods. Check here for more info. Best to call.

Any small box added to a downloader will net him approximately 0 hp. The reason is that the stock software in the ECM will only ask the VP44 for about 80% of fuel. A small box will ask for 100% and a programmer changes the software to ask for 100%. The only ways to add more power after already asking the VP44 for 100% is to either use a major box that taps the wire and overrides the safety parts in the VP 44 - or use bigger injectors.
My personal experience is with DTT transmissions and I regard them as top notch suppliers. I know that doing a full build costs, but it gives me peace of mind while driving.

At 24,000 miles I had some trouble with my transmission in that it shifted from 1 to 2 in a jerking fashion. Since I had bombed my truck with one of the earliest Banks products available at the time I thought it best to beef up the tranny. I now have 160,000 miles on the truck with never a tranny problem. I am hard on the truck and exercise the ponies often...even knowing I have the 53 block. I pull a cow trailer even in over drive. The installer at the time said the upgrades would hold up under the load and they have. I do run synthetic tranny fluid however. Only problem I have had is the torque converter coming unlocked at random on the highway. I found a wiring "fix" (I think on the ATS web site) that addresses this and it worked!

A DTT valve body has held up to 400 hp for a lot of miles! A VB and a TC would do it much better.
That covers Good and Better....for Best - full rebuilt tranny.

I ran a dtt VB only at well over 400hp for over a year with no issues. The tranny already had 80k hard miles on it when I put it in. Call up Stefan and talk to him and tell him what your friend is wanting to do. He'll set you up.

IIRC the power puck is adding timing and fuel within the parameters of the VP44 only. Depending on the methods used you can get too much timing from adding two devices like a programmer and a box.
Without tapping the wire on the VP44 the pump can only be asked to deliver 100 %.
IMO he'd be better off with a set of injectors.
Starting out with a VB only is OK if you don't want to change the TC afterwards. I think that it's a pain in the rear end to build something, tune it, change a part, retune it, and continue this cycle until you either lose interest or have paid for a fully designed system three times over, but in small amounts.
