What did I break Input or output shaft?

Something popped at the track yesterday. The truck will roll in park, but with the engine running going from neutral to park I will get a grinding. I am assuming I broke the output shaft in half but the front part of the output shaft is still spinning with the rest of the transmission while the back part is obviously stationary while stopped.

What do you guys think?

Did it break while building boost, or did it break during a shift?

Sounds like an output. At least you hope it is an output...

I dont know for sure how to tell if its input or output thats broken. But If it was the output, I would think that if the trans was put in park and the rear wheels picked up off the ground you should be able to spin the driveshaft. Or better yet with it in park it should still roll.

That's what happened to me last month...building boost on the line, last yellow came on, released the brake, put the throttle on the floor and POP!!

The output shaft was the only thing that was NOT replaced when we did the rebuild.

I paid for it the next day...

Back to the track the following Sunday and ran a 13.94.

It's very easy to tell when it is an output shaft. When you go back into park with the engine running the park lock lever makes a very very noticable sound.

Is the grinding a quick clicking sound? That would be the park prawl clicking past the teeth on the O/D direct drum. If it moves in park, it would be the output shaft.

What would be more likley to break first on my truck at the dragstrip?? Output or input? I have heard the output is weaker, but i dont know. I usually launch at 10psi. Am i pushing it??

any boost launching really is risking either input or output stock shafts. I launched at 30 several times without incident, then broke the output on the final one. After i fixed that....I was no longer launching at 30. I toned her down to 10.....then the input went...along with most of the rest of the trans, while liesurely strolling up a grade. Funny timing I know, but that's how it went down. Anyway, knowing I can't resist hard launching when the heat is on, I swapped in a bolt action and will leave the drag racing to the other truck with a better auto, and relish my daily driver as a run-down machine that's not so fast outa the gate.

Bottom line....if you're launching with any boost on stock shafts, its not if...but when you're gonna be tearin it down. Honestly.

Well the output shaft died, snapped rigt at the tcase. It was real easy to get too. Now I need to find one. Nobody in town has one or a core transmission. Go figure

Jambii, I have a few stock ones laying around collecting dust, and I'm over in the West Valley near Buckeye. PM me if you need a stock one.
