Question What is the "Correct" Tire Air Pressure ???

I know the placards placed on the driver's side door jam calls for "Recommended" air pressure from a vehicle's manufacture.

As you know, tire manufacturers offer a Maximum air pressure rating based on a given tire's Load.

I need to know if there is in fact a SAFE RANGE for air pressure for tires.

For instance. On a 98 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4, the truck manufacturer's label states that the OEM "E" Load 245/75-16 tires be set at "Recommended" 65lbs.

Tire manufacturer's give the Maximum Rating for E Load 245/75-16 tires of 80psi (Firestone Transforce A/Ts).

So is there a "SAFE" Air pressure RANGE of 65 - 80 psi ??

My door tag says 60 in the front and 55 in the back....I think those are the right numbers. Two new tires installed today and they aired the fronts for 60.

I thought mine said 55 up front and 80 in the rear (for 245/75/16)... but those are the pressures that allow for max gross weights.

question: is 245/75/16 the stock size on a 2wd? my truck has 265/75/16 10ply E's that were on it when I bought it.

Look at the side wall of the tire. The tire manufacturer put the reccomended air pressure on the tire, I would go by that before the sticker on the door.

My door sticker says 245/75-16s E Load and mine is a 98 4x4 CC.

FYI, that is the MAXIMUM air pressure, NOT the recommended air pressure.

That only applies to the tires that came on the truck from the factory,
or exact replacements.

My door panel says I have 245/75R16 E's,

I bought my truck brand new off the lot with 265/75R16 E's,

It now has 315/75R16 D's on it.

That door panel is a completely useless piece of tin now.

That's true.

So NOW what is the "Recommended" air pressure for your 315s ??

I have yet to find and definitive answer as to what the "Recommended" air pressure is for running oversized tires.

The only real info/reference I've found is what the MAXIMUM air pressure is and that is molded into the tire's sidewall.

Anyone know of a definitive reference source for what SAFE/RECOMMENDED air pressures "should" be for running oversized tires ??

For me, the recommended pressure is what ever pressure it takes to get a FULL contact patch on the tires.

On my current tires, that is 65 psi front, and 35 psi rear.

Now, when I am towing, I bump the rears up to 60. No need to run them that high unloaded.

Run what you feel comfortable with.

245's are stock unless you have the "towing package" which gives you the larger 265 tires. Congrats, you have the tow package (which is different than the camper package which gives you a helper spring for slide in camper).

Me personally, anything less than maximum makes the tires way too squirrely, and bulgey around the sidewall.
50psi in front (max according to the tire), 45 in back.

No, I will never put D's on my truck again,
as soon as these are worn down a bit, they're coming off.
