Will it work? As long as the PO returned his truck back to orginal programming it will work for you.
How well will it work? Couldn't tell you, but superchips programmers are considered bottom of the performance fuel upgrades. At least for the 98.5-02 trucks.

Check the classifieds here too, theres always 1 or 2 there forsale.

As long as the previous owner restores his truck back to stock via the programmer you should be fine, as long as the programmer is not defective. Mine is model #3705 and will work on 98.5 to 02 year models. It's not the best programmer but it does have a code reader and you will notice the difference in performance. I was not looking to drag race or reach 400hp so it's the perfect match for my needs....for now.

thanks guys... i skipped THAT specific one, for a New in box(for only $20 more).

i appreciate the input on how well everyone does/doesnt like their superchips. big selling points to me are the plug in, download, then pull it out - setup, along with the code reading and clearing.

nonetheless, if it doesnt make me happy for power, economy and smoke emissions, then i'll try something else!

What if........someone did not return the truck to the stock program? Is there a way to unlock a vin locked unit?

Not without cracking it open....wouldn't be worth it IMO.

About the Superchips...I had one, made my truck throw codes when towing heavy. Ditched it and put an Edge EZ in it's place...no codes, and a little more power by the SOP dyno...

I don't know now because I was looking into get Superchips but now that Edge sounds like a better solution. I see both online but not sure who sells them cheapest... I'll be able to check it out this weekend. I'm stuck in a cubicle

AutoAnything is usually very competitive with their pricing, and they'll pricematch for up to a year after you buy from them. They have the Edge EZ Tuner and the Superchips programmers.

JD730, were you talking about the Superchips Max MicroTuner or the Cortex model? Haven't heard much about the MicroTuner, but I hear the Cortex model is really worth its weight.

3705 was the biggest POS I ever dealt with.

Here's a video of the FUN I had with it. It programmed my truck. But wouldn't return to stock. Had to send it to them to get it updated (for a fee) just to remove the stupid thing. I'll never program another ECM again.

I have the 3705 and am fairly happy with it. It just takes forever (about 10 minutes) to load or unload a program. Power is moderate but not awesome. There is a definite increase in performance and a little gain in fuel mileage. I run mine on Hi-Perf all the time and it never throws any codes. I do like the ability to clear codes and change the tire size for my speedo. Those two things make the tuner good. Mine always says "VIN Locked" so I wouldn't be too comfortable buying from anybody but an authorized reseller. If I could do it all over again I'd just bite the bullet, kick in another $400, get the Adrenaline and be done with it.... I'll sell you mine with my Quadzilla Commander with FP for $699 plus tax and S/H (:-)) if you get my meaning....

I know there is at least 1 Schip module out there w/a vin lock because when I bought my truck it had the program installed. This guy is sol for selling the programmer. Buy an XZT+ and you'll have better performance and more versatile programs to dload from Quad. I had to have my ECM reflashed in order to run the XZT since I couldn't locate the original owner. Good luck.
