What causes that "clunk/thud" when stepping on and releasing go-pedal?

Any reason it would get worse? My brother's 02 doesn't do it at all. He has under 50k and I'm at 69k.

I've never owned a standard that had that kind of slop and wouldn't want one now...mine is tight...no banging, clunking or whatever...

Mine doesn't bang or clunk bad, but when you let of the throttle and get back on it you will always have a little slack that immediately gets taken out with the torque from the engine...

Resulting in a small "thud"

I bet if he eases on the throttle it won't "thud" at all....

It's a lot worse than a tranny gear I'm 'fraid. I'll look into it soon.

OK I got a chance to crawl under the truck tonight...

It's no wonder I hate to let ANYONE work on ANYTHING of mine!

Some of you might remember, some of you wont...last year going home on Leave, in Hooks, TX I broke down when my transfer case basically ate itself, I was stuck there 8 days etc. etc. Well I was in the middle of nowhere and was able to limp it to this "trans shop".

Fast forward to ~5 months ago. Backing up onto my lawn and a HUGE clunk/snap sound from under the truck. One of the bolts holding the front driveshaft to the transfer case SNAPPED. Turns out it was the LAST bolt holding the driveshaft on, as all the rest had already FALLEN OUT! When it snapped, the driveshaft unloaded right into the transfer case shifter linkage, and that is all bent up now too.

I've been having problems lately with some bad sounding thudding/clanking under the truck. Turns out my carrier bearing is bad (lots of movement), no problem, but the driveline still felt 'loose' so I started shaking stuff. My transfer case MOVES WHERE IT'S ATTACHED TO THE TRANSMISSION! I started looking around and BAM, there is a gosh darned stud with a nut backed off. There is slight movement right there where the tcase and trans mate. I'm surprised that there is still fluid even in there. (At least there was 2 months ago, I will have to check again LOL). There is not a lot of movement, but ANY is too much where they mate up!

That is 3 things now screwed up because this hillbilly didn't know what he was doing (and I was stranded). I swear I want to ring his neck.

Broken bolt I have to extract:

Linkage that driveshaft slammed into when the bolt snapped, which is now bent.

Gee that's not supposed to be like that! That nut is on the trans side. I'm assuming a couple more are loose.

This is the seal where I can see movement:

Ouch... I don't think mine is that bad. But I'll have the truck in the air this weekend.

its the t/case slip yoke moving in or out, if the road is putting force on the tranny then its in, and if your on the gas it slides out.

Well I'm glad that Dave found the source of his problem, but I'd like to add that I did experience a clunking on decel for a while. I replaced the u joints and no change so I had the drive shaft balanced and that did the trick. I actually thought it was my carrier bearing going, but the driveshaft man knew best.

BTW no sloppy drivetrain/ tranny here.

Got a new carrier bearing tonight, as well as a new front yoke and u-joint. I think my yoke might have been fine, no leaking past the seal...oh well I kept it anyways, I can polish it if I want and hang it on the wall heh.
