Unhappy Westac Fuel Pressure Gauge reading

I just installed the electric Westac FP Gauge. I installed it in my 01 using the tapped billet fuel filter cap that Geno's sells. The sending unit screws into the cap. Now if the reading is anywhere correct, I guess i'm in trouble. It only reads 8lbs at idle and it took a few minuites to get up to 8lbs. Has anyone else used this new setup and if so, what results. I installed a new fleetguard filter in the installation.
Thanks, Billy

I just installed the same gauge. With a new lift pump, I showed 12 psi at idle after I completed install. After taking her out today (and pushing her hard) the psi improved to 13 at idle. Pressure doesn't drop below 10 psi under heavy acceleration. How old is your lift pump?

piperca, it's the orginal and I have 53000 miles on the truck. From what I've heard from everyone on here it's getting close to needing replaced. That's the reason I bought the gauge and it looks like it has proved that I do need a new pump.

It sounds like it, but I'm a novice at this diesel thing, so you might want the advice of a seasoned Cummins owner. I would think it needs replaced ... for what that's worth. If you go directly to Cummins, it should be in the region of $155, that's what mine cost recently.

Good luck!

Dosen't screwing directly into the cap without a hose subject the sending unit to a lot of vibration?

Raften, I think I've read on here of it being installed both ways. Isolated from the engine and mounted so it would vibrate with the engine. I may be mistaken about that. But If thats the case I can isolate easy with a grease gun hose. My main concern right now is the low pressure.

I checked my reading this morning and it was still 8lbs at idle. I took it for a drive and WOT was 4 lbs, (scarey).
So I bought a new pump and put it on this afternoon and I don't know if I got a bad guage, bad sending unit or if 12lbs at idle is all it's gonna do. When I start it up the reading goes up slow and settles at about 11lbs and I can tap the gauge and moves on up to 12. Took it for a drive and at WOT it dosen't drop below 10lbs. So what do some of you guys think, is it gauge, sending unit, where I've got the sending unit mounted or just settle for what i've got and be satisfied. Thanks, Billy

Hey Bill,
I get about 15-16psi @ idle, but I have the Max-Flow fuel lines. I had about 14 right after I had the new lift pump installed and the Max-Flow lines bumped the reading up when I added them.
12 is not bad,,, and not dropping under 10 @ WOT is good. I would have thought the new pump would have given you just a tad more, but I have read of some folks having the same results with a new pump. You could always put a "T" on the billet filter cap and add a mechanical gauge under the hood to check against the reading on your electric gauge. That's one of the reasons why I left the mecanical gauge permanently mounted under my hood. Plus I use it to check the pressure drop across the filter when compared with the reading on the Westach.
You can see my setup in my gallery.

Thanks for your input RATTLINRAM. I never thought about the Tee, I may just do that. I still may call Geno's about the gauge because to get the full reading of 12lbs I got to tap on the gauge. I did notice coming back from the store tonight that when I pulled into the carport and put it in park I tapped the gauge and it moved up to 13lbs. So I don't know, we'll see. Thanks again

The gauge I first installed was a bad gauge. The needle was sticking and it was reading what I thought was low at idle. I got it from Geno's so the first chance I got I called and talked to Andy and explained to him what it was doing. He shipped me another gauge after they got some more in and I just installed the new one. I'm much happier now. At idle it reads 17lbs and 65mph it holds at 15. This is after I installed a new lift pump. The folks at Geno's are really great on their customer service.
