want bigger tires, what rubs?
hey guys,
I searched before I asked but didn't get anything "concrete". I am gonna buy 6 new tires on Monday. I want the biggest tire I can run without lifting it or rubbing sidewalls. I MIGHT be O.K. with running some mild spacers if necessary but I'd rather leave it stock.
My truck is a 96' 3500 4x4. It has 215/75/16 on it now and they are FN gay looking. help me out.
I was looking at a set of 265/75/16 but I think they may rub. I generally won't tow more than 10,000 lbs. but who knows what I might tow in the future?
thanks again.

I'm pretty sure that 235/85s will clear most 4x4 duallies with no spacer, but I'm not sure (SRW for me).
Some of it depends on which factory wheels you have. On my OEM wheels, many guys run 33" no problem with no lift at all (295/75R16).
I suspect you'd have rear tire rub (spacer needed) before you'd run into problems with the fronts rubbing somewhere.
IIRC, the Dualloes have narrower wheels from the factory (not 8" wide like my OEMs), so that will also limit your tire selection.
I'd look closely into a 235/85 size and see if others have good luck with that.
I don't know as much about the duallies as I'd care to.

I have a 96 3500 as well and I have 235-85-16's on the rear and 265-75-16's on the front. Although they are different sizes the only difference is the width. The height is like less than 1/8 of an inch different so you wont tear anything up. My truck has been pulled several times on this set up and has been fine.

235/85 16 is my recomendation. we have ran that size on a lot of trucks and they work great. they are a popular size and are availabe quite commonly in a 10 ply load range E.

well ****! I wanted to run some MEAT but I guess it's 235/85/16's.... I'd rather it be this way then get tons of tire rub and have to mod everything to fit them.
thanks a lot guys. pics of new rubber and mods up soon.

I drive a 98.5 3500 4x4 at work. The tires have been upgraded to Toyo 235"s M-55's. With no spacers loaded to max GVW the duals just barely touch on the side walls with OE rims. Keeping them at or near max PSI helps the side walls against off road damage. I've thought about adding spacers just to reduce the rock jamming between the duals. Not sure if it would make a difference ??

Tire size: LT235/85R16, Manufacturer:Toyo, Tire model: M55. I believe they are 10 ply. Go to Toyo's web site I bet you'll find more info and can look at the tread pattern. Good luck.

But I love the gearing of the 265s with the 3.54 axle. I'm sure going to a 285 tire is of no real consequence, but the 265s are perfect.
Even a 315 would probably work, but tire selection goes way down, and cost goes way up when you jump up to 315s.
