I have no idea why this just occured to me, but dump it in front of the rear wheel. It will be even louder that way...

I have an '02 with a 3.5" downpipe, and 4" from there. No muffler or anything, just pipe. I have a 5" tip on it, from what I have been told it that the tips almost act like a megaphone, so go with the 4 or 5 and get 1 inch larger tip than the pipe is (ex: 4" pipe = 5" tip, 5" pipe = 6" tip). The longer the tip the more amplification its going to have to a certain point. I have 6" long tip...

Here is a vid from inside the cab so you can hear from there, almost like in real life, but there is a little more low tone in real life.

Turn up your speakers, helps if you have a sub on them...

If you just want loud that seems really easy. SAWZALL the exhaust right after the downpipe. I am sure that would be loud, especially whenon the skiny pedal hard.

Well yes and no. When idleing my stacked truck will be louder than a side piped truck because the noise is on both sides of the truck. A stock exiting exhaust just shoots in one direction.

I say go 5". It'll sound GOOD!

How about 5" dual exhaust??? Wouldn't that be about the same as 5" stacks???

Wow, lotsa replies!

I like the thought of a 5" system, but I dont like the thought of the power loss due to scavenging, especially with the pipe expanding to 5" right out of the turbo. Probably wouldnt lose much, but I want all i can get

What would be perfect is stock downpipe, expanding to 4" to the front of rear axle, and then expanding to 5" tailpipe dumping in the same location, but who sells something like that? would probably have to be custom. that way, it should minimize scavenging and still get closer to that 5" semi sound all of us love

any ideas

Hmm...now I'm not claiming to be an expert but as far as outside the cab noise goes, i've noticed that stacks don't seem to be as loud as a regular exit exhaust. Also, the common rail is definately a quieter engine but the exhaust is definately louder than a 24v. It is more raspy and sounds worse IMO but is definately louder than a similar 24v. Dual setups seem to dampen the loudness also. Personally the louder (definately more obnoxious) 24v i've heard is my buddy's 01 with stock straight piped and a "custom" 6" tip. Before i made up my downpipe i had a turndown off of the turbo and that's it! It's definately loud but will make any drive miserable. A good straight 4" would be the ideal compromise between sound and exhaust flow, oh and with a 5 or 6" tip. It's not that 4 or 5" isn't loud, it is just loud with a different tone. Just my .02

stock size but no muffler or res. and it's pretty noisy, niegbors don't enjoy high idle at 5 am. hopefully a larger 4 or 5 inch is a bit deeper sound / quiter
