Not sure if you have a Harbor Freight near you, but they have OBDII scanners very reasonably there. I think I've seen them for $15 or less.
I agree that the key on off trick will only give you so many codes. The scanner will give you more codes if there are any.
Of course you could buy a Smarty and get the code reader for free.....kind of. Or you could consider it a $650 code reader.

ok i got the codes pulled and now i now it the vp44 i got 0216 which showed on the scanner to be injection pump timing failure. so now my question is which pump should i get? i have already been searching the forums on here and see that alot of guys are going to the sovp44 and i have seen a lot of hrvp44s. i read up on the bluechip pump which cost as much as a hot rod one but rumor is that they will warrenty the pump if tap with thier cover. but i am also wondering if i were to buy the stock pump and get there cover if i had to have it warrentied it would slide by or not.
