Variable Geometry Turbos for Dodge Cummins
For those of you interested in variable geometry turbocharging for the late model Dodge Cummins, be sure to watch Xtreme 4x4 on the Spike network the weekends of March 5-6 and March 12-13. The show airs both Saturday and Sunday at 1:00pm Eastern. You will see a variable geometry turbo installed on a 2005 truck.

This is undoubtebly the way to go if you want a fairly large single. What can be done with the HX35 in our pre-common rail trucks? Anything to go on an HX40?? An HX40 compressor section with a variable 12 to 18 cm exhaust housing would be the chiznit for a 400 HP street truck.....

This is not a Holset turbo, it is a Banks-Garrett hybrid variable nozzle turbo that is capable of about 500 HP and 1000 lb-ft, and still is very responsive for day to day use. We call it the ShapeShifter Turbo.

Wilson and CTD-Neil,
We are contemplating what needs to be done to make this applicable to pre-common rail ISB’s. At this point it looks like it could be done with a different exhaust manifold casting.
Seabee,
This is not a ball bearing turbo, it is a variable nozzle with a standard plain bearing.

CTD_Neil,
Be sure to watch the show to see some more detailed photos, etc. The variable vanes are controlled hydraulically using the oil pressure that is available in the center section of the turbo. Electronics are used to drive a solenoid to move the vanes. I don’t have any links with more info at the moment. As far as test vehicles go, well…I have a feeling we will have no shortage of those.

Was browsing around the Cummins site, and they have a variable turbo too...
Gotta figure out a way to control it though... I wouldn't think it would be too tough... have the controller set to look for, say 30psi. if it sees less, it closes down the inlet to make it spin up faster, until the 30psi is reached, then opens it as much as is needed to maintain or let it surpass the boost level specified.

Thanks for the heads up!! Ill be sure to watch it! Also, are they gonna drive the truck, and burn tires, and all that good stuff? Is it going on a bone stock, or already modified truck?
