Don, I gotta ask. What makes a set of $600 valve springs better than a set of springs from a small block Chevy (not that these fit, but you can buy a good set of aftermarkets for <$200).

Guys stock 24V springs are junk if your are going to get crazy and run big boost numbers, sled pull or whatever.

I have nice imprints from the intake valves on all of my pistons from when I ran stock springs.

In fact, you lose power running stock springs. My intake plenum was full of soot from combustion entering the plenum (POWER LOSS!).

I have seen this also on a friends truck who also sledpulls, he has soot in his plenum. His is a 24V (2001).
I now run the F1 Diesel Prosportsman springs and up top my valve float is gone and the truck runs MUCH smoother. It runs right.
Dont kid yourself with stock 24 Valve springs. They are good for a mild truck but thats about it.

I'll be honest though, I dont know what to tell you on a 12 valve. I havent started modding my 96 yet!

What makes a Cummins cost more than a Small block Chevy??? There are also 24 valve springs vs 16 for that SBC. Also, there are a blue million SBC's that are being upgraded, and springs for Cummins have just come out in the last 2 years.

well considering i dont have the $600 for springs right now i just cant get them unfortunately. im already looking at $1500 for the head/machine work, HG and studs.

one day when i decide to run 4krpms, or a bigger turbo with 50-60psi etc, ill find someone to buy springs from that doesnt come on a forum and argue like a little kid.

I would not call the information Don gives on these forums "arguing like a little kid," especially considering they way it's typed!!

I would say if a product like Don's Prosportsman valves have PourinDiesel's approval...it's a good one!! He tests and trys many products, and has nothing to gain but performance value from anything!

But what do I know...I ran twins with stock 30lb valve springs on my 95, and regularly turned 34-3500RPM. But I guess since I haven't had the head off, there was no damage caused right??

IMHO,
Chris

Don isn't arguing with anyone he is defending his products from someone that attacked them . I've seen numerous intakes with the soot in them on trucks that were even in the 40 pound range. If your truck has over 100,000 miles like most here do the stock springs will also be fatigued. We were picking up a tenth on the Turbo Buicks in the 1/4 just by swapping out fatigued stock valvesprings and that was at less than 80,000 miles . And they only see 18 to 24 psi of boost with most set-ups. My spare head will be getting Don's springs along with the port work and o-ringing. Like mentioned you can always add springs later. What do the performance springs cost from Schied or Enterprise? And will they work with the stock retainers, locks, etc?

Quick question... What's best way to keep from dropping a valve if you do the springs with head still on the block?

You can do it with the piston at TDC. No worries, valve will only drop a few mm. You can do 2 cylinders at a time - 1/6,2/5,3/4. Done it many times, The special valve spring compressor lets you remove all 4 springs at the same time, very slick.

Great info...as usual. Thanks Fred.

Sounds like you agree with above...after market springs are worth doing?

Absolutely....................High Boost and high rpms, especially with twins, and big singles is a problem waiting to happen. More so with an aftermarket cam. 3400ish is enough for a little contact or a lot, you might never even notice, until one day after enough abuse and a 3600 rpm blast.........piston time. As Justin said most likely power is being lost at high rpm with stock springs.

Thats true, but ya still gotta give props to guys like Don and Doug @ PDW who are trying to get us some quality parts manufactured. Gotta get the ball rolling before prices come down =P
