Valve Adjustment Ramblings 12 & 24v

Okay fellas. All of you that have played with settings for the valve adjustments lets here your opinion. What have you found to be the best setting for valve adjustments on 12 and 24v's. I know the book calls for 10 and 20 on both, and I have set numerous engines at this spec. However, I know running the valves a little loose on an N14 can increase the hp and tq quite a bit.

I know there was a thread about this on the TDR sometime back, but I cant find it. So, what has been the best setting for throttle response, tq, hp, 11 and 21? What about MPG, say 9 and 19?

Too many variables to have a single good setting. If you set them at say .008 and .018 instead of 10 and 20 you do get a slight bit more lift. And I mean slight. 2 thou more LOL!! But at the same time you increase the time the valves are both open at TDC. Depending on set up this could be bad or good.

Play with the setttings and see what you come up with. We tried a bunch of different combos and ended up with stock or close to it in most engines. Higher lift and duration cams can vary the setttings again.

I did manage to tweak in a HP loss of about 10 when they were too lose.

Thanks for the reply Don. I will play around with the settings and see what I come up with. Also, like you said, there is a pretty broad range of tolerances on the specs. However, I have always been told that it is more important to make sure all of them are set the same, more than hitting the 10 and 20 mark right on the nose. This is why a in lb tq wrench is very nice when setting the valve adjustment. This way you make sure all of them are set alike. However, I have found that the T handle preset 5in lb tq wrench from Cummins actually starts to compress the spring at this setting on some trucks. After finding this out, I talked to a couple of Cummins Reps and they suggested that the reccomended in lb setting was 3 in lbs. Just something to pass on.

Everything I have seen says to run them tight. Like 8 and 16. I had mine set tight and just yesterday set them back to stock 10 and 20. I'll let you know how my mpg does since it was normally 18.2 around town.
