Using Turbo pressure to fill Air...

With the growing rise in air horn/tool/air bags talk, i've been pondering the idea of filling a air tank using turbo pressure... is there a safe way to do this?

My edit!!!

Air compressors are expensive, so wouldnt getting in your truck, spooling and building PSI, work better then waiting for the compressor to fill the air tank?

bout the only way is to catch what your wastgate gets rid of. Dunno how you would do this, and you'd have to be at WOT to get anything. Much much much easier to buy a compressor.

besides, youll never get more psi than your turbo can push

some cases this is 20 psi, most is 35 psi, and some upwards of 60-80.

Its just not feesable. 35 psi wont run any kind of horn or air tool.

What if a person was to set up a drive off the driveshaft or pinion to run a small compressor?

They make em. I'm looking for a compressor that will run off the pto. My lil 12 volt valiair (sp?) wont quite turn the 1/2" impact!

The only problem will be getting the compressor to go idle when the max pressure is reached. You could do it with a simple "wastegate" but this would seem hard on the compressor.

The pto style would work much better. Air when you need it instead of air all the time. There is a way to do it, we just have to find it.

On Board Air Sytems
These guys make a system that allows you to convert an old/new AC compressor to use as a belt-driven air compressor.
Might be what you're looking for.

They only have mounting kits for 24V's. Anyone know of an engine-driven air kit for 12v's?
