Upgrade opinions
Buying a '99 qcsb auto tomorrow, its basically stock with 120k on it. It has no guages or anything aftermarket, so where do I start, I want reliable with some oomph. Not looking for 400hp.
Should I get a programmer? That will save me having to buy some aftermarket guages alone right? This is my first dodge so Im not sure where to start.
Thanks

Upgrading procedure should be in this order:
1) Gauges - Boost, pyrometer, fuel pressure, and tranny temp for your auto.
2) Fuel pump upgrade to assure proper fuel pressure under all conditions.
3) If everything monitored is fine.....most important being fuel pressure, then you can upgrade to a mild box like the Edge EZ. The more aggressive fueling boxes are the ones which can come with the "all in one" digital gauge display. If you choose to go with a box that has the digital display then you shouldn't use that box for more than the gauge display unless you move this procedure to the number 2 spot and move the fuel pump upgrade to number 1. Cranking up the HP without making sure the fuel pressure is good will result in destroying the VP, and you wont know what the fuel pressure is until you have gauges.
4) If you opt to go for more HP than the EZ, or equivalent, then your auto tranny will be the biggest weak link. But if you upgrade to a quality aftermarket auto tranny, you'll pretty much be fine for any amount or power.
5) If you choose to install larger injectors then it becomes a process of making sure boost and EGT's stay under control.....but 400 HP shouldn't be a problem.

Kinda like above...but
go edge juice with attitude.
two options
1, tap the pump and have an extra 120hp/300ftlbs of tq,
pros: extra hp and a very fun truck to drive.
Cons: risk of vp failure depending on vps condition
2. dont tap the pump and get 60hp/120tq.
pros: generally very little risk to VP or transmission, and still have all features of EJ/A
con: your gonna want more power, once bitten
the cost of seperate gauges and a "box" will cost more than an edge J/A, and the attitude does so much more than the mech gauges ever can or will.
down side is likely after installing an EJ/A you will find that your fuel pressure is not enough, so be prepared to upgrade your fuel system at the same time, depending on fuel pressure, you might be able to hold off, but if its got a stock LP its likely already failed or very weak, witch if this is the case be prepared for a VP should it crater.
