Back in December I spent big $$ on a set of 5100 bilsteins because I was told that the silver finish on them would not start rusting as fast . Well 4 months and 1500 miles later they are starting to show rust . So has anyone else experienced the same problem with their Bilsteins ? From the looks of them I might as well have just bought the cheaper painted ones.

Don't know about the rusting issue, but I do know that the cheaper yellow painted ones don't ride as well as the 5100.

I do like the ride but I hate rust so I might try and put some kind of clear coat on them

Yup, mine did the same thing. They are pitting more than rusting. Once the weather breaks I am gonna pull them off and give them a nice paint job. Other than that they ride ok. But defiantely need to be painted before install.

Mine rusted very quickly also so I sanded them down and painted them with silver rustoleum hammered finish paint. The color matches the stock appearance(taped off the stickers)and they survived the winter without anymore rust.

Now you have me wondering. I usually protect mine with a nice coat of dirt. Guess I'll have to scrap it off to see what's under there.

What really makes me the maddest is you pay good money for these shocks and then they turn around and rust .

I've noticed by keeping the oil vent tube in the factory location...it throws out the right amount of oil to the bottom side of the vehicle to keep things from rusting.. You could move to TX or AZ...no salt on the roads.

I think the shocks work great but believe the coatings and protection should be as = to the ride/performance. I'd use the silver primer paint if I had to.

Well, Bilsteins are made here in Southern California. Maybe they think every state has the same weather conditions as here in SoCal.

Funny, I haven't had the rusting issue with my 5100s ( yet )
( fingers crossed ) and they coat the roads here with salt.

No rust on mine. Been in salt some, but not regularly.....not much snow or ice anymore here in NC. Heck, not much rain for that matter in a year or more.

I should also add that mine ride great, way better than stock.

No rust here up on the wet coast?
Mine are over a year old now so I wonder if they cheapened up the finish?

I am very happy with my ride but I will have to add I also added these new superlift springs at the same time I did the shocks so I would have to say the combination of the two gave me this excellent ride .
