No, it is 100% correct, allways and forever, until the end of the world as we know it. It does not matter whether it is a gas engine, diesel engine, steam turbine, an electric motor or even a person turning a crank... HP = (Torque * RPM) /5252 . . (using torque in the units of Ft*Lbs)

What is different on diesels compared to gassers is where in the RPM range that the engine has it's toruqe peak.. But the HP at any given RPM is the torque at that RPM, times the RPM divided by 5252.

In your example if your truck made 174 HP at 2,700 RPM then it made 338 FT*Lbs at that RPM. If it said it made 338 Ft*lbs at 2,700 RPM, then you were making 174 HP at that RPM. Thats how it works, end of story.

Most likely it printed out an average torque through the range of 1,700 to 2,650. That does not mean you made 386 FT*Lbs at all the RPMs from 1,700 to 2,650. Actually, you can bet your last dollar you didnt... It probably made like 430 Ft*Lbs at 1,700 and about 340 Ft*Lbs at 2,650 and it did a crude average and gave you that 386 number.

i understand that there are some sick vws out there.. but heck im talking about the 1.9l not the 2.5l passat engine... yeah i did research and there is an audi a8 racer with the 2.5L passat engine putting close to 1600 ft lbs of torque to the ground........but im talking about an local guy not a company sponcered car... his car dont smoke all the much.. does a little but not all that much.. and it is quick dont give me wrong.. it throws me in the seat when i test droove it but that was just down the street and back not launching it down the track....

2800lbs/190 hp is 15 lbs per hp or 190/2800 = .067 hp per lb ==>TDI
7,000lbs/591 hp is 11 lbs per hp or 591/7000 = .084 hp per lb ==>CTD

Looks like the truck has the advantage unless he's lying about his hp

he could be lieing about his power because the dyno he showed me he didnt say if it was recent or not... it just had his car vin and make on it didnt tell me the date and time it was taken.... so it could be anyones game still we are planning this event on the 1st of the year..... he wants 10k for his car and i told him if he beats me im going to buy it... but most likely ill buy it if he doesnt beat me... but that he dont know... just to make him try that much harder cause i wanna see the real attempt not a fake one....

My thoughts exactly....

horsepower to weight ratio, the cummins has the advantage, torque is what helps you off the line, the cummins is at an advantage as well..

As I said find, self a generous piece of pavment if your not going to a real track cause from the info you gave if you short yourself on the track well.....
This race will all be in the first 100 or so feet (as are all) but if that thing lights out 3-4 car lengths on you you may not be able to real him in before its over. 1/4mile is pretty short once your running faster than say... 14s. I think you will out-pull him upstairs but probably not by as much as you think. Looking forward to hearing the results
