Twins with a stock turbo?

Anyone know of a kit (or have you fabbed it yourself) to do twins with the stock turbo? In my eyes i think a stock turbo would be good for the initial turbo since it spools pretty quick and then running a bigger turbo after it (on the intake side and before on the turbo side). Or am i completely wrong about this? I would just like an economical way to do twins b/c 5grand is a little steep for a complete kit with 2 turbos being a college student. For the people that fab their own stuff, is it safe to use carbon steel on the exhaust side? or would it be better to use stainless or something else? I would rather weld carbon steel if i fab my own since it flows alot easier and doesnt burn through as easy as stainless but i think it would glow rather quickly under constant exhaust temps possibly even melt!?! Anyone with expierence?

Lots of guys have built twins with the stock turbo and gotten very good results. I'd say you could have a solid 500hp rig using the stock charger on top (that's my guesstimate based on just hanging around here and reading what others have done).

You are wise to look at economical twins with a 12V and auto trans-- big single turbos are really tough with that combo.

Try something in the size range of a Garrett GT4202 or a S472 from Borg-Warner. This is the S400 with a 72mm inducer-- a very nice medium-hp twins primary imo.

Do yourself a favor and install a Governor Spring Kit to increase the RPM range of your 12V-- that will really help a lot, and they're not that expensive.

Look for source automotive [rips twins] he sales unwelded kits for pretty cheap if you can weld. they use the stock turbo. Or you can just by parts and pipes.

When I fabbed up my twins using the stock turbo I used a mild steel schedule 40 3" elbow. When I was researching seemed to be common practice. Although stainless would look much better. As mentioned if time is an issue sourceautomotive has the kits that use the stock charger. The kits seem reasonably price I just opted to do my own, because the whole process of doind the twins was more my goal than actually needing twins.

That because you got sucked into the evil world of GT ball bearing turbos. Cant go wrong tho, even if it "only" gains you 200rpm in spool up time, thats still 6% more usable RPM. Seems like money well spent.

When i first started reading on here I always wondered why more of the import technology hadn't made its way to the diesel world. Defi gauges, HKS turbos, and the water/meth (which seemed to get popular about a year before we got into it).

I will say the diesel guys, take the cake for home brewed devices that work. Never saw the amount of thought process when i had my cars.

so the garett stuff will spool up sooner actually?

200 rpm is something, seems like Hohn and me both live at an high elevation-slow spool up!

how about this turbo ht3b

at what rpm should an hx35 and ht3b combo spool? id like to get stock spool up, if thats possible anyway....

thanks

other than buying one off of fleabay, HTT sells two common bottom turbos for less than 7bills...

does anyone know what the part # is for the s400 you use in a twin set. a local junk yard has a bunch of detroit 60 series turbos new in boxes in a van.dont mean to hijack the post but i think a junk yard is the cheapest way to build your own set of twins

I have often wondered why the BB Garretts are not more popular in the Cummins world. BB Garretts are pretty much all you hear about in the Powerstroke world, has been that way for years. With the narrow rpm range of a diesel, the quicker spool of a ball bearing center seems like a no brainer to me (no I don't have one, but thats because I am cheap).

Part number 171702 is the S400 (B2) commonly used as the primary in twins.

74.5mm comp
88.1mm exh
1.32 A/R

www.citydiesel.net had the best prices when I bought mine. Around $600.

part number 171601 has a slightly smaller comp wheel or housing.
