twins or garrett powermax???
just brainstorming right now.
alright, what would be the more ideal setup - towing twins or a garrett powermax? my truck is my daily driver and tow rig - no drag truck, so highend hp isnt as important. however, i still do want to have some . what is important to me is spoolup and air for pulling. i dont to much as far as weight (under 10k pounds), but occasionally something pops up. im just usually pulling my rock buggy. im thinking cost for either of the two systems would be about the same. i would be building my own twins (hx35 and a ht3b or similar). again i want better than instantaneous spoolup. im not worried about how fast i can go - just how fast i can get there. just trying to be practical for the street. so how are the garretts for my use? my whole line of thinking is that the only way i wouldnt go forward with my twin setup is if a ball bearing turbo could fulfill the same duty. this would be less work for me so it could be spent on my buggy. so what do yall think? and what size injector would compliment this setup the best? im looking for power AND mileage out of the whole deal. i will be going with don's machs.
and the tranny will be addressed much further, not to worry.
thanks,
jeremy

Well I'm thinking the downside of the garretts are the 3" outlet and they recommend only running 40 lbs of boost plus if you look at their maps it looks like the stage 1 actually flows less than the stock turbo, if I'm reading the map correctly : http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...ge_Cummins.htm
Like BB said- the 35/3b is the proven combo

Garrett turbos belong on imports. That just don't do what they're suppose to do or claim to do on a diesel. Some people have good luck with them but it's a gamble. All of those ball bearing jobs are a little on the costly side too.

You could certaintly go bigger but your trans probably isn't going to like it. Not to mention that the juice with a mach 1.6 is right at about 400hp or so and the 35/3b combo can keep 400-450 right at 1250-1300* EGT's all day long with no sweat. But then again, I'm picky about my egt's. I don't like them being over 1250-1300* at all for any length of time.

Turbonetics makes a ceramic ball bearing turbo that can actually flow large amounts of air. For the primary turbo BTH-3B like I have will hurt your spool-up and is abit laggy. The best primary is the B2 or a S4 turbo. My HX-40 spools pretty fast, the only that I don't like is trying to spool the turbos after you have been coasting for sometime. Mine are verry sluggish. I usually kick the tranny down a gear to increase the mass flow through the turbos. At that time I have covered the hiway with a nice big black cloud.

I agree with BB. If your going to tow on a regular basis go with a smaller set of sticks. I've run 275's, smarty, and 35/3b and it spools just fine. I've also towed with 200+hp injectors. The EGT's stay cool, but the engine temps get warm. IMO a 90-125hp injector would be about perfect for 35/3b and towing.

sounds like a plan! how well do you guys think my trans in its form now would do with this (with the vb)? as is very evident in my buggy, i dont like to run something thats in question. i want to know my stuff is good to go, hence the amount of money i spend in high-dollar parts for strength but still lightweight. weight is not as big of a concern on my truck tho . i had never really imagined myself going above a mach 2 injector. like i said, and bigblue said, i like being able to abuse my stuff and still not have to worry. whatever im driving i drive hard, and if i built it i expect it to perform and take it. i will have the trans finished up, but i am just curious.
anymore comments/opinions welcome.

IMO your tranny isn't going to like it. If you went with a small injector (40-60) you might get a way with it. I dont think the tranny will last though.

next thing on the list is housing sizes. on the hx35 - 12 cm or 14 cm? what are the pros and cons of each, and what would the difference in spoolup be?
thanks,
