Turbos for Dummies

Which turbo would be best for my setup? Want quick spooling and lower EGT's. I can peg my egt guage right now...Oh and as the title states, I have zero knowledge about what turbos are best for what application...

Some sort of 62 variant should serve you well. Look at charlie8301 aka Randy's truck with the same injectors as you making almost 475 with a super phatshaft 62. Super B, HTB2, b-1, or phatshaft 62 would work nicely too. The super 62's (HTT or II) sacrifice some low end spool for top end power and make a lot of 400-500hp folks happy.

Then there's the new garrett powermax bb turbos which offer very quick spool especially in the midrange, but top out at around 40#'s and have a smaller outlet (3"?) They're priced close to the turbos above.

As far as the holsets go a cheap mod is a 35/40 hybrid upgrade- good for 400hp+ for less than that many dollars.

There's other options too, but I'm trying to keep this simple. I am no expert and stand to be corrected- I just know it can be confusing trying to select a turbo so I'm trying to start a good conversation

Turbos 101: Important to understand... you can't really have both. Bigger turbos spool up more slowly due to time required to get greater mass rotating. It's the laws of physics in action!

That being said, it's not hard to get use to things like slower spoolup and to make what you decide on work.
You have two choices.
-Medium Sized Turbo to meet your needs now... giving fairly good spoolup and lower egts.
Example - Phatshaft 62/12, HTT HTB3 62/12, Good to 450 hp +/-.
-Bigger Turbo to cover if (when) you go with big injectors... giving slower spoolup and no egt concerns.
Example - Phatshaft 64/14, HTT HTB3 64/14, Good to 550 hp +/-.

Two considerations:
1-Living in southwest, bigger turbos are 'dogs' in the hot weather... period
2-Above fact can be offset, somewhat, by having a manual tranny. It's a big advantage over an auto because you can control rpm's better, making the bigger turbo more usable. (Takes some getting use to and different driving habits but is doable).

Bottom line - Turbos have a fairly narrow operating range for good efficiency (that's why they have wastegates) and the size you choose will always be a compromise between good spoolup with easy smoke control (low end efficiency) and low EGT's with max WOT performance (high end efficiency).

Only way around the compromise is Twins

like everyone else said it either spool or cool. I ran a SPS62 and a PS64. the 64 spools just about as fast as the SPS62, and seemed to cool a little better.

Phatty, Rowland..appreciate the advice.
-I don't tow at all. This is all stop and go driving. Just wanna get rid of the smoke I have. I say I don't plan on upgrading injectors so I just want to be efficient. BUT, if I do I was thinking the HTB2 since I can upgrade it. Tyler don't you say the KSB-1? I know that bigger the turbo the slower the spool-up, but with the fuel I have I don't need that slow-spooling of a turbo do I? If it was your truck what would be your top 2-3?

Would it be beneficial to do the stock hybrid until it gives out and THEN by a diff. turbo. Will I see a noticeable difference or should I just spit out the dough for one of the ones mentioned above? Oh and is there a market for stock turbos so I can sell mine?

There is a big market for stock turbos. Bigger than you'd think.

My top choices for singles for your application would be KSB-1, PS62, PS64. I wouldn't screw around with a hybrid. You'll quickly out grow it. With one of the other one's you'll have some more room to grow.

Id get the ps 62 or the sps 62 if i were you (yes, i biased)

The 64 would be too big for you. I don't have experience running a hybrid but I know it'll support 400+. Too cheap an option not to mention

I'd say 62 or a super 62- II or HTT

If you get an HTT HTB2 62/12 from New Era Diesel, you can upgrade it for way less than a new turbo.
