turbo question

Were some of the hx-35 used on the 2nd gen trucks internally wastegated?I got one today on e-bay and there isnt a wastegate flapper that I can see.The guy said it was internally gated. But that is just the turbine housing, the compressor will be the same right?I am going to put a 16cm. housing on it so it should work fine shouldnt it?I just want to be sure.

all of the hX35's found on the Dodge trucks were internally wastegated 12cm housings.

are you sure it's an HX35?

That's an HX-35 alright, but it's been seriously hacked on. That housing has been ported to within an inch of its life and the backplate is missing. Everything has been bead or sandblasted, too. I'd see if you can bail on this one. I once bought a turbo that looked too shiny - it was full of sand due to sanblasting.

If you manage to get out of this one, PM me the ID numbers on any other ones you're interested in and I'll let you know what ones I don't like.

To post or PM a link, just highlight the text in the address bar, right click on it and select copy. Then in the message, right click and select paste. The vBulletin software will make it a link automatically.

looks good to me... cutting back the divider like that helps prevent boost creep when running a lot of fuel.

it's missing the wastegate actuator... I'd port the wastegate hole a little bit and run that housing instead of a 16 non-WG. it should flow as well or better than the 16, and it'll spool up a lot quicker.

I've got a couple backing plates laying around if you need one.

I'd just try it out as is before you do the HTT stage III... if you decide to do that, just send them your H1C and have the stage III done to it... then you can turn around and sell the HX35 for $200-300 and get some of your money back out of it. an H1C isn't worth much, and once you upgrade the compressor side, they're the same exact turbo.

What I'm worried about is that the 60k it's got on it was a really hard 60k. Anybody who's porting the turbo is running a lot of boost, I'd bet it's close to shot. And like I said before, I'm worried about how shiny it is. I doubt it was taken apart when it was sandblasted.

I bet it's got a lot more than 60k on it...

but you gotta realize, it was probably pulled from a fairly low mile cummins and then sold to some ricer who put it on his car... I doubt it saw more than 20-25psi on that car. and he's the one who ported it like that. I know a lot of guys who run these turbos on their 4cyls, and they all cut back the divider on that to keep the boost down.

I'd rather buy one that looked like that than one that was spun to 40psi all the time on a Cummins!

if it feels tight, run it!

and you don't have to sand blast 'em to get 'em lookin' good... a can of Beryman's and you're in business

Forrest <-- sold LOTS of used turbos in my day

Beware, sandblasting the compressor wheel can throw it way off balance.
You should be able to tell just by looking if it happened.

don't let these guys scare you... the seller doesn't have that many feedback, but as long as the turbo is as described in the ad, I think you'll make out fine. as long as it feels good, I'd just run it as is.
