turbo leaking on 2001 24v. Should i replace stock or upgrade?
I have a 2001 24v with a hypertech chip,4in exhaust and a new cummins injection pump. Other then that it is stock. I tow a 18ft landscape trailer 5 days a week and random other stuff whenever. If you get underneath the passeneger side and look up at the compressor housing you can see where it is leaking oil. I would ideally like to put a new turbo on it without having to change injectors and all the other stuff. I know im due for a new tranny so thats to be expected to go out. Which turbo is going to be my best best to not run lots of boost. Im not looking to get a 450 hp truck or anything, thats why i have my race car i just need something to run my business and pull my race car. Any help would be awesome.... thanks fellas

If you are staying relatively stock, the stock turbo would be the way to go. No need to go bigger when you won't use it. Just makes driveability suffer. If you are going to upgrade the truck a bit more before you are finished, look into a 57mm turbo. Flows more than the hx35, but still spools well and keeps things cool.

stock turbo & stock injectors are fine. manual or auto? if it's an auto, an HX35 from a manual truck is a good inexpensive upgrade from the stock hy35. i prefer an aftermarket air filter as well, not only for flow and cooldown but the stock air box doesn't seal worth a crap!
does the hypertech chip do boost fooling? do you have a boost elbow or j-hook now? running up to 30 lbs of boost will add power and not overtax the turbo.

I would agree. If you were to do anything, I would just go with an HX35 off of a manual truck. You dont want to go to a big turbo on a close to stock hp truck that you tow with and drive.

Yes automatic. I recon ill just check the forums to see if someone has one then.,...? No the hypertech plugs into the adapter under the dash and just has the basic three power levels and tire size adjustments. I was thinking about doing a edge comp box.... any pros or cons? I really do appreciate the help also!!

Comp is nice for the in-cab adjustability, but more power than you need for daily use. EZ is plenty of power and has three levels with the boost fooler built in. Downside is that adjustments are under the hood!
Also, I don't think gauges were mentioned....? At least EGT and fuel pressure, I like boost as well. Edge Juice/Attitude or Quadzilla Adrenaline boxes are more expensive but they have gauges built in to the display.

And if oil is coming out of the compressor housing, and its on the compressor wheel, you need to stop driving it ASAP as it could cause a runaway condition where you cant shut the truck off because it is running on the oil in the intake system.
