turbo lag test

I have a lag in my truck after changing my turbo/injectors.
I tested it to be sure----
1] 0 to 10 lbs. boost-how long at what speed at WOT

18 mph & 3-4 seconds

2] 0-60---WOT time only

7 seconds

You can see my low end lag------3-4 seconds to 18 mph
-----next 3-4 seconds 42mph

Can anyone tell me how or what to adjust??????

# 4 plate all the way up, DD3's & HTB2 turbo -62 comp wheel -42 lbs boost
are the changes that I made.

Can someone make a suggestion on where to look?

Thank You,

Wayne

you've got a bigger turbo... generally, that's going to make it spool up slower... about the only thing you can do is twist the AFC some more and see if it helps. maybe adjust the lever arm up some.

I would start with looking at the position of the fuel plate and function/adjustment of the AFC. It sounds like the AFC is holding back the fuel until you are building sufficient boost. Could you have a faulty AFC or is the fuel plate in slightly out of square? Remember, even if the fuel plate is all the way forward, if there isn't sufficient boost the AFC won't let the governor arm move forward. No movement of control rack, no fuel, no fuel no boost. I'd also check the position of the governor arm to make sure it's not slipping under the nose of the fuel plate or at least see where it hits. Remember to check it while holding up on the fuel shut off solenoid. I'm not sure if it could be an overflow valve malfunction but you may want to check fuel pressure if the above things are ok. I've got the same turbo, 191 DV's, 370's 3K GSK and can spin the turbo up to 20-30#'s instantly. Let us know what you find.

turbo test

Forrest,

I will try to move the afc & star wheel all the way up to see what happens.

Paul,

I will check the plate to see if its fitting right. I also have thoughts on changing the plate to a 10 plate or a 100 plate to solve the plate issues.
I think the afc is working good as evident by the quick 0-60 times. But I will check that as well when I double check the plate.
I may slide the plate back a little to see if its hitting better.
That lag is there when the truck won't drop into a lower gear. I drop the truck out of OD, get above 1500rpm & then it rocks.
Paul, one last thing, can you do the same test & let me know how your truck performed?

Thanks Guys,

Wayne

Hey Paul, you got an auto or stick...your 191DV's and 370's would throw quite a bit more fuel than a 180 pump with DD3's and stock DV's.

Other than that, I agree. Something needs tuned to make that turbo spin up. Forrest's stock HX40 should spool the slowest of the two turbo's you three are running, and I'll bet his spools faster than what MY WORLD is describing.

HTH,
Chris

NO WAY!!! my turbo's a pig... there's NOTHING going on at 1500rpm!!! LOL!

well... something's going on, but not much...

I do my tests in 5th gear... too hard to watch all the gauges in the low gears.

and I look for the point where it hits full boost... the transition happens so quick, I couldn't tell you where it makes 10psi

Mine's the same way as Forrest's. Nothing happens at lower rpm, and there's ALOT of lag, but put it to the floor and wait a few seconds and when it starts it's at 38-40psi almost instantly. makes for spectacular takeoffs. Lotso smoke and then bam you're buried in the seat. I don't mind though, that little civic that tailgated me this afternoon might've though

Wayne:

I'll try to see what numbers I can gather. It's been cold here (6 F this AM) and I don't like to beat on it too much until warmer. Looks like it's a new set of delivery valves for you. Where will it end?

Cris:

I've got an auto. Good point about the 191's and his stock DV's, didn't see that before. Where do the DD3's compare to 370's?

DD3's are about equal w/ the 370's... the 370's will dyno a few HP higher. but the DD3's are cleaner burning.

Masonic-Dodge Cris -

I forgot the "h". I was answering Signature600 Chris but missed a key. I'm scared to talk with TiminVA knowing that the bombing bug has bitten and is hard to say no to. I'll probably end up there eventually but there are several steps (read $) before that. Good to catch up with you the other night.

turbo lag

SmokinFive9 4x4,
Love the civic story, was that doing your civic duty????

Paul Winey,
Let me know when the weather warms up [wanga8@comcast.net]
Do you think 191 DV's or 10 plate or 100 plate would be the answer?
I'm leaning to the 100 so you don't worry about the boost signal. Any thoughts?

Forrest,
Thats the reason I went with the DD3's, for cleaner burning. That grey bottom of the truck looks bad all black when the truck is clean.

Cris,
Long time since we talked about an hour or so? What are you hooking up???

Paul #2,
Be careful with that " BUG " this soon after you just paid the Christmas bills from last year!!!!!! OOPS, didn't mean to throw another Cris into the mix.

Many Thanks to everyone, eventually I get-er-done. But I will post it.

Don't overfuel the truck too hard before you get boost. If your EGT"s drop just a tad before the boost comes on, you are overfueled and the AFC needs some tinkering.

Question that I have often wondered. Does the lever adjustment matter much with a #0 plate? I have never adjusted mine. Is there any benefit?
