Re:Turbo?

Personally, I'm not a big fan of Holset turbos, nor their hybrid derivatives (although if you're going to buy one, Piers builds the best there is). The HX35s (and derivatives) are only good to the 350 HP, before they start beating up the air, and the HX40 turbos are awful fragile (I don't like seeing these on customer trucks past 400 - 425HP). I don't have any experience with the HX50s, except on large equipment.

Do yourself a favor, and have a hard look at one of Kurt Yardley's turbos, especially the new K.45. He's found a new exhaust turbine with a smaller wheel than the B1 series, and a new compressor with a 1mm smaller shaft than the B1. He's got a good external wastegate that he's using, and between the lighter components and the wastegate, he's got drive pressures way down from the B1's. Last time I was talking to him, he was almost at 1:1 boost:drive pressures. He's thinking that the K.45 (available with 12 different exhaust housings tailored to the truck) will be good to at least the 475 HP mark. If you plan on running drugs, and want a bigger single (versus twins), then a B1 is an excellent choice as well.

Just spitting out some options to confuse the situation ;D

Rod

Re:Turbo?

Which turbo is the best depends upon who you talk to. The folks at High Tech Turbo, here in SLC, claim that Holsets are the most reliable turbos made. High Tech is the Utah dristributor for Holset, Garret, and Schwitzer.

What I think is neat about the B1 is the waste gate design.
