Truth in dealing with larger injectors
I have been reading on the pros/cons of running larger injectors for a long time now and I have to say I'm still not convinced that it is a good thing for the daily driver. Could anyone please share on what you were after to gain with larger injectors and what did you have to give up to get it? There is always a give and take. Excess smoke, bad idle, stalling, milage problems, etc. I dont want to give up the great reliable smooth performance of my truck for any ill effects of larger injectors. But then again I am still in the hunt for upper RPM power while towing. And the occasional passing of a vehicle on the highway. I must admit, I am totally confused here. The only real thing that is holding me back is the fact I probably will need to get a clutch with the installation of injectors and I dont want to spend for both at the moment. If there was just an easier way to turn up top end power without hampering the reliability of the injector pump.

I went with mach 1.5's from Don M as I wanted a bit more towing power than stock. I have to say that I have not seen any negatives whatsoever with these injectors. No excess smoke, the truck idles the same if not better than stock, the fuel economy did not decrease, if anything it may have gone up some, but not enough to mention. I would say unless you are thinking HUGE injectors, you have nothing to worry about with slightly larger injectors. I have had my injectors for over six months and 20k now and no complaints whatsoever.
Good luck with your choice

I had DD 3's in my 01 and gained a smoother idle, better performance and better mileage with not bad smoke.
I had to give up the stock turbo, add a boost fooler, which was an EZ stacked with a TST box.
I towed heavy too.
Another thing I had to go through was a head gasket, it was an ETH.
O ringed the head, no problemo after that.
I always say, ya wanna play be prepared to pay.
Oh yeah I upgraded my fuel delivery too.

I'm running Mach3s for more than 100 000 kms now (62k miles) and I don't have any issues with them- depending on the setting of the box from you have to mash the pedal to get a puff of smoke to a nice cloud at a quick takeoff (watchout that truck loves to run) the smoke is adjustable- I can set it to less smoke than with the box on most aggressive with stock injectors. My mileage got a bit better after the excitement (and some sets of tires, front brakes etc) wore..
So I'm happy with them - idle is very stable, no problem there- only a little more cooooold diesel clatter when starting the truck at -25C (-13F)

You don't have to give up anything. What you may be overlooking is the difference between mass produced factory injectors and custom, after market products. I can only speak about Don M's Mach injectors, but the technology has grown tremendously just in the 2-3 yrs I have been playing with them.
My Mach 2's smoke less and idle smoother than the previous 1.5's I had. I believe, from a recent conversation I had, that the new Mach 4's make 50% more power than my 2.0's and smoke less! I have never gained any mileage...but lost none either!

My project was one based on a budget. My goal was to build as much power as possible without spending money. To date, I have not spent a DIME on engine mods, other than a BHAF, anad some exhaust pipe. I blow away every other truck on the road, diesel or otherwise, and most of the ricers as well. Granted there are no 500 hp+ trucks here , but for the dollar to hp ratio, you can't beat my power level and expense. I have not experienced ANY drivability issues AT ALL, cranked timing, bigger marine production injectors which I salvaged from a smoked boat engine, DIY plate, DIY boost valve, free to me AFC kit..... on and on. Without being plugged in she'll start on the second rev at 5*, no smoke, just a gray haze full throttle, and still getting 16-18 city. I pull my 28' cabin cruiser up a grade without EGT problems, and the wife can still jump in and go to the grocery store without having to know a "driving combination". bottom line, it'll drive like a stocker, or blister pavement like hot rod.....only a CTD man, only a CTD! Make the simple, free mods, and you'll be all smiles and still be able to make the mortgage and not own stock in a fuel station.
OH BTW, my story isn't totally true....I said FREE horsepower, but I left out the part about an EXPENSIVE drivetrain!! I found this out early in my CTD days, and paid drearly afterwards. But the theory applies. Stay within the limits of you're transmission, and the horsepower is still free. You can buy speed rag parts to accomplish the same result, but why? If you're handy with a wrench, do it yourself, you'll learn a ton as a bi-product about our wonderful engines.

Well thanks for all the input. I really want to get some injectors but I'm just scared the clutch will smoke. I dont drive hard by any means so I'm not sure how long it is supposed to last. The only real stress I could see the clutch having to deal with is while towing. I'm not even really sure where to get injectors. I think I want something around the size or power of DD2's. Any suggections as to where I should get some? How much are they these days anyways?
