Tranny Temp

Getting ready to order a trans temp gauge and was wondering what the operating tem of the tranny is and when I should worry. Most gauges read to 250 is that high enough or should I get a higher one.

160 - 180F is normal, over about 210 you should pull over.
Over 250 your ATF is toast, will smell burnt and should be replaced.
My main concern with tranny gauges is many don't read low enough (140 min)and will sit at the bottom of the gauge and not move in cold weather. Makes the gauge sort of worthless.

My ISSPRO Tranny Temp Gauge reads 100* to 280*. Still sits on bottom peg in cold weather on the Hwy (under 30* OAT). Works well.... Need probe in the hot line.

When trans was stock, I never let it go over 200*. Only time it would was Dallas gridlock on a hot day.

They have gone up alot since I bgt... but R5659R on ISSPROS website is $119.??. It's their top on the line EV gauge.

You can usually do better than the direct from ISSPRO on prices. I think they mark them up some to keep Dealers happy. Shop around, whatever brand you decide to buy.

Is that a temp for a pan mount thermocouple or hot line install. I know temp is temp but the hot line gets a lot hotter quicker. What is a safe temp on hot the line?

Thanks.

My numbers are for the hot line.
I've been using this $40 plus $16 sender gauge for ten years no problem.

Here is the solution for a 2nd gen but it's the same for a 1st gen. I chose the easy route and just bought a new line with sender unit built in.

*edit*

Just looked again at my own post and if you have the 47re trans this line will work on your trans.

Easy install.

Dont' know about the light might be in the owners manual. I was looking at diesel manor and they have an adapter to put it in the line pressure check hole. How accurate would that position be?
