I'm really leaning towards the 285s. For one, the M55s are a better tire for my usage. For another, the 315s that *can* be run on the oem wheels won't necessarily wear properly on the narrow end of the "acceptable" rim width.
I'm afraid that if I shoehorn the 315s onto my 16x8 alloys, that I'll have to run low tire pressure to get even wear. That means more rolling resistance and lower mpg. I'd like to see even wear at around 50f/45r, and I know that the factory alloys are the "perfect" width for a 285.
The 285s do look good on the factory wheels. The 315s seem to want more wheel, like a 17 or 18.
Oh well, the 315s are a mere $200 more for the set

down
I just down sized from 315's they were Buckshot mudders though. I loved the look, the fuel mileage was around 19 mpg , Had no problem stopping them or taking off in 2nd, But I barely got 17000 miles out of them, They wore terrible, and were spongy steering them. I chose the bfg 285/75/16. So far so good, Really tight on the road Just have to get used to the look....... The intimidation Factor is gone................. Well until I turn the Tst up! I think I will like them once I get used to the different look, But the handling is hands down better.

I was debating between the 285's and the 315's myself. I chose the bigger tire because I didn't always want to be wondering if I should have gone bigger had I bought a set of 285's. My friend's 98.5 handshaker routinely gets 20 MPG highway with RV275s and a Comp on 3x3 after he bought his 315's. His mileage went up compared to the 265's at 18 MPG. I didn't expect *my* mileage to drop by switching to the larger size though.
The best situation would be to try out a set of each size tire for a week and see what you like, but that is easier said than done.
On a side note, another friend recently bought an 02 HO 6sp with 4:10 gears and 285's. He hates the highway RPMs. He just bought a set of Denman Coyote A/P tires 305/85R-16 (36" tall and skinny ) to help lower his overall gear ratio. D25 springs and tires expected to go on this weekend.
You will reach a point with any tire/gear/engine combination where you run out of power in top gear. I crossed that point when I bolted on the 315's. To correct this, I can pick a smaller tire, regear the differentials, or add more power. I'm going to add more power.
Good luck with your decision.

But on the tires I would go with the 315's because they look sweeet on a 2nd gen.

for your usage either or would work. I run the M55 in a 285, yes its teh largest size that they make but i do tow with the truck a bit, and i do see alot of rough ranch roads. So far with 10K on them they still look brand new. i have driven through some nasty stuff with them and have not had so much as a wimper of a problem....

Phil--
1) Are your 315s on 8" wide wheels? How are they wearing if they are?
2) I might otherwise be concerned with power, but the fueling setup I have delivers "adequate" bottom end
One possible downfall to the 315s is that a larger single turbo would suck with the super-tall gearing. Honestly, since I turn 2K rpm right around 72 mph, it's hard to see how the gearing could be improved over the 265s. It's perfectly in the "sweet spot" imo. Is a 9% going to ruin that? NOt likely, but possibly..
I'm buggered by even the small stuff because everything has an effect on everything else, and I REALLY hesistate to screw up a wonderful thing-- hence my slow and methodical rate of bombing.

Why not the M/T's in a 285/75/16? They are "E" rated.
I'm in the same boat, trying to decide between the two. I'm not considering the 315's. I love the look, but performance is higher in my book.

Dumped myTOYO 315"s after a few months, got a sweet deal when i bought them and lost a couple of hundred when i sold them. The main reason i dumped them is i moved up to a larger 5th wheel and wanted to run the 285 again, plus i think the 315"s are better suited for the 4:10 rear end,i have 3:55.I loved the look of the 315's but the 285"s are doing the job, once i wear these BFG'S out i'll go back to the Toyo M/T but in the 285 size again. The picture is of the Toyo 315,the only photo i have ---sorry DW
