Towing with sp/sps 66
Do you think I'll be able to tow with one of these turbos. I plan on running some big injectors during sled pulling season and the going back to the M4's in the off season. With the m4's, the 66, and manual I should be able to control temps shouldn't I. Max weight would be around 10-12,000. What are your thoughts.

running the full B1 on my truck it's pretty rough to try & tow with, you can't lug it at all, the surge is almost impossible to get rid of in the lower rpm's, I need to do some sdjusting on the boost elbow & see if I can get rid of some of it by keeping the wastegate closed longer, I've actually considered trying to find something else to run, just doesn't seem like the B1 is very tow friendly, I think the housings are just too big???? anybody else have problems towing with a big single???? I towed a 11 - 12,000 5er to Indy and back last year with my '04 and a SP-66. It was marginal, any grade with rpm below 2050 and egt's would climb past 1200, my towing limit. I went back to a full B-1 and it's a 100 rpm better and I get along with it. I run 315 tires with a 3.73 gear. My experience with the VP-44 motors is that they will tow a bit better with the large turbo then the common rail and much better then the 12V or p-pump Cummins. The SPS-66 has a larger turbine wheel then the SP-66 and from what I've heard doesn't tow or tolerate low throttle nearly as well. That said I've not tried the SPS. I had no compressor surge with the SP-66 on my 3rd Gen unless I mismanaged the go pedal.

The SPS66 on a 24v is NOT good for towing. It will have surge issues...... The PS64 was designed to eliminate the surge issues that go along with the 66 wheel, it flows a ton of air has better spoolup and you can tow with it. The SPS66 was designed as a "specialty" turbo, meaning for guys who are looking for max HP, drag racing, or sled pulling. The turbo doesn't have the best street manners (like towing). The turbodoes work better on the 3rd gen trucks than on a 2nd gen, and don't even think about towing with a 12v auto truck!
Every turbo has its good and bad points. Unfortunatly there is no Holy Grail of turbos and the turbo needs to be matched to the customers needs.
