Towing injectors with light performance mods questions.

Hey all. I'm in the market for some good towing injectors; have narrowed the choices to either RV275s, F1 Mach 1s or DDP 1s. My main goal is to be able to pull 12k lbs. without having to worry about EGTs and the trans (VB will be insalled to increase line pressure), keep the HX35, and get better milage and more power throughout the entire RPM range . Current mods are below and I will install my 4" exhaust soon. With the boost elbow and my HX35 and one of the above injectors what kind of increase in EGTs can I expect over stock? Have any of you experienced a difference in performance and EGTs between the 3 injectors above? When we do tow, we tow the 12k lb. trailer up long grades - that's why I don't want to worry about EGTs

All opinions welcome.

Thanks in advance, Mike.

I've got Stage 3 Jammer nozzles which I think are a little bigger than the RV275's...I think, anyway they are great with my combo. I only pull @ 10K and so far EGT's aren't an issue...unless I want them to be. If I drive like I have some sense, I can maintain my speed with my camper up any hill and keep my temps below 1200*. Normally, I run @ 950* on interstate and 1000*-1150* in the hills but I do monitor my gauge and back off enough so I don't cross the magic 1200* mark. Empty it's really not a problem unless I have the XZT+ turned up and I'm really in the go peddle.

Oh yeah, I still have the stock turbo and can hit 28 psi when she's really pulling.

Of the ones you listed I ran RV275 and now I have M1.6. I would say that I was disappointed by the RV275 and extremely impressed by 1.6s. Considering the fact that you will tow heavier and have an auto transmission, I think you will be very pleased with M1s. I would not hesitate to pay the price difference between 275s and M1s if I had to do it all over again.

Thanks Paul. Sounds like your setup is just about where I want to go. Do you know what EGTs you're running compared to what they were with the RV275s? How about the difference in power? I think the UVW of your Arctic Fox is pretty close to ours.. around 9100 or so.

Thx, Mike

I'm running marine injectors in my 98. I'm also running a stick, so YMMV. I've only pushed over 1200° a couple of times, both times pulling 8K+ up a steep hill, following a stupid motorhome that couldn't keep any speed up.

I'm using the stock turbo, at least I think. I know that it pushes close to 40 psi under load, as I peg the 35psi autometer gauge.

Mike, I don't have a pyrometer and I know need one, towing my TT in the mountains like I do. For now I use RPM for guidance, not letting the engine lug and run at low RMP on uphills, keeping RPMs in 2000-2200 range, making sure not to make smoke. Power with M1.6 is a night and day when compared with 275s. In fact, I could not feel much of a difference at all with RVs after I replaced the stockers with them, and with 1.6 I feel it throughout the entire range of RPMs. In fact I like the injectors better than the box, I think they give more widely usable power. The VA kicks in on acceleration mostly, so I expect it will smoke a lot when towing in the mountains and intend to put in the switch to turn it off then; I am sure it does something when cruising but I am yet to calculate any MPGs with it, I have not had it long enough to tow with.
Our Fox weighs about 10k loaded. The total rig weight at about 18,000# and high elevation (6,000-11,000 ft) is the only place I tow it. My turbo is stock. Rip Rook warned me that with 1.6 and VA I will be looking for a South Bend CON-OFE clutch soon, we will see... so far I have not had the time to go camping, been working to pay for the upgrades I think if you are not looking to upgrade your transmission and worry about EGTs you might want to get M1s, but still, get the pyrometer. Better yet, call Rip Rook and talk to him, he will explain the repercussions that adding Machs will have to your tranny.
I also must add that I got the exhaust brake before any power upgrades (safety first, fun later) and think it was a very wise decision, even though it is expensive. I get down any 6-7% grade without ever touching the brakes now with the trailer.

With just my box on the EZ setting and the 275's EGT's can be a problem on the big hills in the summer. Coolant temp also creeps on the long grades.

I agree with DRD... I have the XZT+ box and RV275s and tow less than you are planning to... only around 5-6000 lbs, but I can easily hit 1250* or more up mountain passes here in CO. Now granted, that is much higher elevation than a pass out east and the lighter air seems to struggle to bring EGTs down. So I'm glad the XZT+ comes with a "timing only" setting. On this setting, I can pull grades with very little problem while towing, even Monarch Pass or Vail on occasion.

If you tow in the high elevations, I'd be concerned with anything more than RV275s and a box on the "performance" setting. I liked to feel the power going up the pass, but in one situation, I was holding about 1100 or so pulling the grade and hit the power setting on the XZT+ and hit the fuel a bit with my right foot and within seconds, I was hitting 1250-1300*.

This was during the 4th of July weekend so it was warm, but that means only about 75* at that elevation. And as DRD said, water temps crawled a hair past the halfway mark and the fan came on, even at just the timing setting while EGTs were at 1100 or so. I wonder what a BHAF would do... I have a Donaldson re-usable insert filter in and a 4" exhaust already.

I agree with CORed, egt's can even be an issue with 275's with summer temps.
That being said....I've read that mach 1's will run about the same egt wise as 275's. I'd go with mach 1's. I've had 275's for 1 week(vp44 died, might as well), and they are better than stock, don't get me wrong, but if I could do it over I would have waited and thrown some f-1 mach 1 or 1.6's in.
EGT's can be controlled by keeping RPM's up and being smart about how you're towing.
I guess I tow what I consider to be fairly heavy, best guess 25k gross average on any given day.
