Question Too much Boost?

More questions about turbo boost. I just installed a Banks big Hoss tuner and like the Edge EZ it does not tap the pump wire. I drove the truck with 17 psi on the boost and then modified the wastegate actuator to produce 23 psi of boost. My acceleration seems to have dropped off more than the stock. Could i be beginning to defuel with this box. Does it not have a boost fooler?. The kit cam with a restricted brass elbow for the soft line turbos, but nothing for the hard lined turbos. THis is why i put a drilled restictor in it and drilled a hole in the elbow. How much boost is too much? I thought i wanted about 32 psi,but do i? More boost, more power? or just lower EGT's. My truck has the HY35.Will increasing the boost as high as 32 psi overspool this turbo,or damage it? Is 32 psi be what i should shoot for. Tony

35psi would be about max for the turbo although it can spool more it just wont be as useful because it will be heating up the air. So try to shoot for 30-35psi.

More boost will only equal lower EGT's. I'd call Banks and see if there tuner has a boost fooler built in. You could also be starving your engine for fuel. How much fuel pressure do you have at WOT?

Thanks for the replys. I drove the truck today and gave it a little work-out. It pulled very well without the feeling of defueling. I plan on calling Banks tomorrow to see if their tuner has a boost fooler. I am at this point assuming it does since i remember when my wastgate stuck closed, what it felt like when it was defueling at about 25 psi of boost. since you say that i will only lower my EGT's with upping the boost, maybe i will keep it adjusted to 23 psi (my EGT was 1000 * F at Wot ) and i haven't installed the 4" exhaust yet.(Waiting for exhaust brake, due to come in this week). Big blue, I haven't bothered to check fuel pressure because i just put a new lift pump on her last month. So i am assuming that my fuel pressure is OK. If any one can give me a reason to up the boost further to say 30-32 psi,i would appreciate it Tony.

32 psi is about the upper limit for the HY-35 and will no stress the turbo. Only reason for going for more boost would be needing it - due to overfueling. I don't know squat about the Banks system, but if it adds fuel you probably will want the boost. If staying with stock injectors and not getting any smoke after boost kicks in - your ok as is. That being said, general rule is, within reason, The more air the better. Also, adding an exhaust brake may change things.

Thanks for the input. I am not sure if i can acheive 32 psi with the stock acuator. I calibrated it to 32 with shop pressure and i think it is blowing open under exhuast pressure. So far the max EGT have been between 1000-1100 * F. so for now i have been told by Banks i am Ok. IF my Egt's climb higher i will have to increase the boost some more thanks Tony

If all your seeing is 1000* EGT at 23-25 psi of boost, I wouldn't do anymore. No reason to put undue stress on the turbo.

Big Blue, 1000*-1100* F EGT is all i am seeing right now at WOT, but that is with the truck unloaded, but not with haveing the 4" exhaust on yet. Still waiting for the exhaust brake to come in this week and then i will be putting the exhaust on and seeing what EGT"s run from there. One thing i have noticed with the Banks controller since i have installed it, is how much quicker the turbo spools up,and i am pulling the 10-20 range at least twice as fast as i was when it was stock.
