Tire questions , i need some help.

I just bought a bone stock 95 , with 215 75 16 tires on it , so i obviously need to remedy this...

I found a set of 315 75 16's at my local tire shop , someone had ordered them in , then backed out at the last minute. I can get myself a very good deal on them, like below cost.

This is the tire : http://www.eldoradotire.com/products/product.asp?id=14

Has anyone here ever had a set of them? I want to know what they perform like on snow mostly , they look like they would be good on pavement and offroad , but what about snow?

How wide are the stock chrome rims on these trucks? they must be at least 8" wide? The chart says 8-10" is acceptable.

My other option is a set of 285 75 16 Dayton timberlines :

(scroll to the bottom)

They seem to get very good reviews from everyone i know that has had them, the downside being they don't come in 315 75 16. Price wise they would come out just about the same as the 315's.

What i really need to know is if the 315's are going to make it like driving a big steam roller in the winter , or is it going to be half decent?

And will the 315's clear ok without a lift?

Sorry for all the questions , i am getting my truck monday , and taking it for tires on tuesday, and this is the first time i have been into this situation.

The stock steel wheels are 6.5" wide. The stock wheels are rated for up to a 265/75/16. I would not go bigger than a 285/75/16 on the stock wheels. I have been running 285's on mine for about 20,000 miles and no problems. Others have been running them longer without any problems. If you go to big, it will put extra load on the "bead" of the rim and could cause it to crack. You will also probably get much worse mileage and wear out of the tires.

Geez! can you find any cheaper tires? I wouldn't use that crap on a go cart!

When I worked at Tires Plus we sold a lot of Timberline ATs, mostly because they were a midrange price. Never had any problems balancing them, don't remember any coming in with separations etc. We put them on my Ma's Dakota and as long as everything is in alignment they hold up and wear well. If you're out of alignment they wear down really fast. Didn't get to see the MTs up close ever, nobody ever ordered any but they look good on the poster.
You are going to need at least a leveling kit to clear those 315s. And they won't fit on your rims. If you want a taller tire that will fit better on the rim, BFG has a 255/85 R16 size in the MT, I've never seen a 285 on these rims but even the 265's seem to balloon out pretty well. just my .02

I have seen 305 on stock rims. They looked to fit fine to me. The big thing is how wide of a tire you want. If you go any wider then you will need different rims.

I run 35" tires(315 75 16) on 7" rims on my burban. They stay on the bead better when you air down for sand and rocks. When I was down at Coos Bay Or running on the dunes I only had 4 pounds of air in my tires all weekend. I never once popped a bead. One time a friend stood at the top of a dune when I was haulin butt up it. When I landed he said my front end was 3 feet off the ground and all of my beads were still in tack. You just have to modify your air pressures to make your tread face flat to prevent wearing the middle from over inflation. If you run to low you'll burn off both edges. But again they won't fit without the mild lift anyway.

Here is a 35 10.50 15 on an 8" wheel. The sides stick out pretty far.

I ran 305/70/16's on my factory rim and I rubbed on the lower control arm. Ran 315/75/16's on the stock rim and they rubbed on the lower control arm. Put a 2 1/2" leveling kit on it and they still rubbed on the lower control arm. Nothing bad, but annoying none the less. So then I went and put a 4.5" lift on it with 16x10" rims and now I don't have any rub.
