Tire Advise Please!

We just bought a 2k 4X4 2500 Cummins for my wife! The truck does not need tires right now but I wanted to start the search early. The truck will be driven 80% highway 15% off road and 5% snow.
I want a tire that does not sing or roar on the highway, but has great traction when I need it on mud and snow...

What you think?????

Thanks
Rick

Re:Tire Advise Please!

Rick...BFG"s all terrain (good traction in snow, poor in mud, quiet), Goodyear Wrangler MTR's (excellent traction in mud & snow,a little noisey-not bad). These I've tried and liked. An All Terrian tire in general, will give you the best all around performance, except in mud. A mud tire will perform better in snow & mud, but wear more. I'm running Parrnelli Jones Dirt Gripers, 10ply, 305x12.50x16. Excellent in mud, snow, truck pulling etc., noisey on the hi-way, wear great, pricey. If you find a tire that can do all what you want for cheap let me know!!

I bought some Bridgestone Dueler AT REVO's about 10k ago. So far they have been great in all conditions. I have not seen any serious mud with them yet though. They seem to be wearing quite well. Time will tell if they were worth it. Not that it means that much but they did come with a 50k mileage warranty.

Barry, I would characterize my driving as close to yours. mud is not important to me so I really like the BFG AT KOs 285/75-16.

Nitto Terra Grapplers great tires, they have had some great review! Priced right 525 out the door!

I also run the Parnelli Jones (3rd set) and they are the best tire for all around driving. They are quieter then my MTRs, great in mud and snow and wear awesome. The drawback is they are pricey. If they do not fit the need, the Nitto Grapplers on my Jeep Grand Cherokee (28560R18) are really nice too. For the price, I don't think they can be beat. They are also available in a 10 ply (E Rating). LE

Re:Tire Advise Please!

Just my opinion...

If you plan on doing alot of high mileage driving, I would try n' steer clear of the BFG's. Although they are a GREAT tire, both for noise and traction, my experience is that they tend to be a little softer of tire and will wear quicker than some other brands. I've been running Big O Big Foot A/T on both my 1/2 Ton and CTD. No noticeable road noise, excellent traction in snow and mud and are wearing incredibly well. They also offer a X/T model that is a little more of an aggressive tread for those that want a little more. I have spoke with several guys n' they are having good luck with them, but again, bigger/aggressive tread leads to more noise. Kelly Safari AWR's have worked well for me also. Again, IMHO. I paid about $125 for the Kelly's n' $165 for the Big O's. $20 cheaper than what BFG's were...(nnnyaaa nnyyyaa Sparkchaser) ;D

Good luck!

Re:Tire Advise Please!

Maybe it is just me in my straight piped truck but I can't notice any difference in road noise with the BFG mudds or the other AT's that I have had on my truck.

The M/T's do wear faster that an all terrain tire but there is absolutely no comparison when off road.

Depends a lot on what kind of off road driving you are planning on doing? If it was more of the logging road type driving I would go with some form of an all terrain tire.

Mudd tires normally aren't the best in snow since you have less rubber on the ground.

All a matter of trade offs.

I don't find myself off road as much as I would like to (time and money) but personally wouldn't go back to less aggresive tires. Even if they do wear faster.

Re:Tire Advise Please!

I also run the Big O Big Foot A/Ts. Big O is the only tire I've used on any of my vehicle in the past 20 years. When I bought the Ram, I went to Big O and took off brand new Good Years and put on the Big Foot A/Ts

Best warranty in the business - never had any trouble. Free rotation and balance every 5k miles. No road noise.

I went across the Divide in Wyoming the night of March 17, '03 during the worst blizzard to hit since 1903. Semi trucks, pick-ups and cars all over the highway and in the ditch. I made it through all the mess with the Big Os, no chains or studs, until they shut me down in Cheyenne. Wouldn't have anything else on my truck.
