timing....educate me

hey guys i am wanting to learn everything that i can about timing like wat timing set for what hp. what exactly it is turned up for what it does when you do thanks guys in advance.....

Timing has nothing to do with total HP per say but actually where in your RPM range you want to move your peak power to. If you have a truck that is only going to be spinning 3000-3200rpm's you only need 15*-18* timing. If you are trying to make your power at 3800-4000rpm's then 23*-26* would be more appropriate IMO. But the unfortunate thing is the higher the RPM's and timing the higher the cylinder pressure which is the #1 headgasket killer.

well im studded and o-ringed but i have a 160 pump pretty much maxed out and im running a 12.945 at 107 but the fastest my truck will go is 115 maxed out im lookin for a 215 pump from a freind right now my timing is at 16* now but i need my power higher than it is now..... but i want to know how to do it my freind set it for me the first time but i wasnt around so he couldnt teach me so i need to know wat to do thanks.....Chris

Timing advance will do several things.
First, it will increase vehicle emissions.
Second, it has the possibility to increase fuel mileage.
Third, it will usually lessen EGT's.
Fourth, it will increase cylinder pressure and can hurt your headgasket.
Fifth, engine noise across the RPM range will increase.

Rule of thumb:

A little more is good, much more gets expensive quickly!

Others can chime in with everything I forgot!
