timing advance

I want to advance my timing up on my 94 auto. I am thinking to 16.5*, would that be about par. I would like to do this myself this weekend. How hard is it to do and how long does it take. Do I need any special tools. How about a good set of instructions? Any help, thanks
Heath

P.S. I am planning on a #10 plate or a #0 plate in the near future with some 191 dvs and a 4k spring kit

Here is a couple of links that should help point you in the right direction. http://dodgeram.info/tsb/recalls/605.htm Go down to part “C” it should get you started.
More good info http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/mor...r/Power_ve.htm
http://www.dodgeram.org/support_pgs/diesel_ix.htm
Hope this helps.

As you have read from those links, there are some special tools required to time the pump. I considered buying the tools myself until I found out how much they cost. If it was something you were going to do on a regular basis then I could justify the cost but I am able to pay a local guy to time the pump for 1/5 the cost of the tools.

When I had mine timed it was checked first and had slipped down to 10*. The data plate showed it should be 11* (still very conservative). Got it bumped up to 16* and it runs great.

I agree with nut, if you're just doing it once have someone else do it, it's not worth buying tools for a one shot deal.

I have the timing set and the barring tool. If you would be interested in being the guinea pig of sorts, I would be willing to do it for you.

How far from Des Moines are you?

cumminsman~
It does a number of things reduce EGTs, better start up especially in the winter, runs smoother, and gets a little better fuel milage. I think thats about it, someone well chime in here if I have forgoten something or am misinformed.

Iron Horse~
Sounds good to me, it would be a bit of a drive I believe you are over by storm lake, right? I am just south of Waterloo a bit. Pretty much stright east of you. I would be game for it do you think we can get it done in a day, let me know what your thoughs are on the subject and I am sure we can work something out.

Advancing the timing will...

Decrease exhaust temperature
Increase cylinder temperatures/pressures
Increase fuel economy (yes, economy is better)
Increase your output of NOx (a pollutant)
Decrease your output of Hydrocarbons (a pollutant)
Increase the amount of black smoke at peak torque

Actually, I am in the process of throwing together an automotive diesel repair/performance shop in the Des Moines area. I have a shop leased, and am in the process of getting all my shop tools rounded up and getting everything secured with the venders.

So the work would be done in Grimes, not Alta.

I am available anytime after this weekend, so just let me know what you guys are thinking. If you can wait a little bit, I am going to try and get a KDP jig too.

Iron Horse, sounds great let me know when you are ready, I need to do the KDP myself, we could also do my 91. I would in DM usually six days a week. If you need a little help with anything give a shout. Keep me posted. He is my cell # if it is easier. (319)415-7983

doodah, the bomber party sounds good, we should start a chapter, I look into it about two years ago but couldn't get enough response or intrest.
