Exactly right. The timing pin on the pump is not to be trusted for finding tdc. Ok for valves though.

So there really aren't any special tools for the task? Seems like everytime I look into this there it is recommended to use some special tool kit made just for the dodge cummins. How about turning the motor over, is it just a normal socket?

I use a 15mm & 1/2" ratchet on the harmonic damper bolts to turn the engine over. Probably not the best way, but it's worked a number of times for me.

when I did my GSK piers told me to just put a rachet on the alternator pully. I didnt really like the idea but I tried it and it barred over well enough without any issues. Just make sure its out of gear.

Yea I've heard of that before to but I don't care for the idea just in case I ever have to take that pulley off. For the MB we also use the harmonic balancer bolt.

i use the alt puller to spin the motor backwards, it always slip if you try to spin it forwards. but for setting valves and gsk it works good. mike

I thought spinning a diesel (or even a G@$$ER) backwards is a big no-no, hurts the wrist pins and the seals don't appreciate being ran under vacuum.
