Timing
I know there has been a lot of timing threads lately so sorry for adding to the collection. I was wondering if someone could post directions on how to time a 12 valve or post a link to a tech page are recommend a book to buy. I had mine done the first time and i want to learn how to do it myself. Thanks

I would say the 1st thing is to get a factory manual , Geno's Garage is where I got mine .
I did not see any gauges in your sig. ?
I do not have the timing pages listed in these sites , but they are there .

you will need the tools cummins barring tool and snapon sp500 kit and you should print off the instruction from genos I just finished doing a 94 160 pump 30 min. ago (2:30pm/3/2/08 first one I did you will want a helping hand and make sure you recheck your work its real easy to get off your first time

You don't NEED a barring tool, nor the gear puller from the snap-on kit.
All you really need is a delivery valve socket and dial indicator..
You can use other methods to rotate the engine, and you can deff. fab your own gear pull

I use the dial, with the DV socket, barring tool and puller. I was just saying the only thing you NEED is the puller. You can mark out degrees on the damper. With the pump pinned (you will need to know what that timing would be, since it can vary between hp ratings and if a shop has tweaked it), pop the gear and rotate the engine back the desired amount. If the pump is pinned at 13.5 degrees BTDC, and you want 16, you'd rotate the engine backwards 2.5 degrees. With a 9-3/4" damper, multiply it by Pi, divide by 360, each degree is equal to .085", or about 5/64". So you'd want to rotate the engine back between 3/16 and 13/64. I'd still want a barring tool to do it this way though, as the barring gear will keep the engine from jumping around.
My disclaimer. I've never done it this way, never even seen it done this way. But I have read of guys doing it this way. Personally, I'd invest in the proper tools to do the job (including a barring tool), will make it much easier to do and verify.

You can also just use a degree wheel on the crankshaft and a homemade pointer you can get em for around 30-40 bucks ...i would only use this method if you know that the timing is stock or you know the current setting..
one way to check stock timming is check the timing pins on the motor and the pump... if they wont both line up then its been changed ...
