Question Time to upgrade front brakes on my 98

So what the best replacement rotors and pads (that won't brake the bank) and where to buy?

Thanks Roger

i love my powerslot cryo treated-slotted rotors, with hawk pads. i believe genos garage has them. i got them from diesel performance parts, if i remember right it was right about 300 bucks, which is not much more than replacing the stock junk. big improvement

you can litteraly spend anywhere from $100 to replace everything up to $1500+ it all depends on what you want and what you are willing to spend. i think you would notice a much bigger difference if you took the time and money to swap your rear drums out for discs. would be better braking than anything you can do to the front alone. my .02

Does any one know if the caliper mounting bracket on a 98 and a 01 mount to the knuckles in the same way and r they interchangeable. If so we could run the bigger 03 style rotors in the front with newer style hubs. I am also working on a kit to give us manual locking hubs at the same time

not yet....but i do plan on doing it. i am going to see how hard it would be to just get the parts off of an 01.5 and up and bolt them on. thinking i will only have to make a bracket for the caliper but wont know till i try. i have done it on other vehicles and it was night and day difference in the braking.

My problem is the rotors and pads are toast and don't want to replace them with stock stuff or high dollar replacement stuff

you can get some aftermarket rotors from autozone for $29.99 each and about $45 for good pads. or you can go slotted/drilled rotors, you can buy an entire set of the rotors and pads on ebay for like $140. the only problem you will have is TRYING to change them. not sure if you are familiar with the front axle set up but they are a real bear to change wih out the right tools and shops usually charge $150-$200 labor alone for the front axle.

Ok I looked at my 98 to day and the front caliper mounting brackets r part of the knuckle they do not bolt on like my 01 caliper mounting brackets do. Thus the 03 brake upgrade will not work on a 98 knuckle. Now for the question does any one know if a 01 style knuckle will bolt up to a 98 and if so where to get some?

If you've changed one of the front hubs out, you can do a rotor. From what I recall, on the 99 the rotor is sandwiched together by the lugs/studs. Yes, I need to do the same as my rotors are warped from towing w/out trailer brakes. It never fails...everytime I'm towing some jacka$$ pulls right in front of you acting like it's nbd. I'm thinking NAPA rotors and pads but open to other improved ideas.
